Several years ago a preacher moved to Houston, Texas. Some weeks after he arrived, he had occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, "You better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it." Then he thought, "Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? "Anyway, the bus company already gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a gift from God and keep quiet." When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the quarter to the driver and said,"Here, you gave me too much change." The driver, with a smile, replied, "Aren't you the new preacher in town? I have been thinking lately about going to worship somewhere. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change."

When my friend stepped off the bus he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, "Oh God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter."

It's odd, normally I often seem to get shortchanged at the checkstand, but this summer I have frequently either received too much change back or the clerk has incorrectly added the total (in my favor). When I have either handed back the change, or pointed out that they undercharged me, the clerk is usually dumbfounded. Usually they point out that they never would have known, and can't believe that someone would voluntarily return money or pay more. Once the clerk tried to argue with me till she finally realized I was telling her to charge me MORE. Talk about flabbergasted. We never know who is watching, or what kind of impact it will have on them. (Altho we do know Someone who is always watching.)

Last year I returned to the Wal-mart service desk to pay for five packages of Christmas tree lights that somehow the checker had neglected to ring up (with children with me I usually don't notice mistakes until I get to the car and check the ticket). They were so shocked that I would come back in and pay that the supervisor was trying to get me to take a free six-pack of pop. I told here no thank you, that's okay. I didn't realize, until then, how unusual it must be to be honest today. Sad.
