Music to Recover to

Are there any songs you've been listening to a lot in the last couple days?

Any songs on this list of songs not to be played on ClearChannel stations that you don't want to hear ever again?

This morning I found myself thinking that Barenaked Ladies' "When I Fall" was not a good choice, for example, but it's not on the list. And I'm still trying to figure out what's wrong with "Walk Like an Egyptian," unless it's the references to cops.

Ob la di, Ob la da? Because it says life goes on? Um, life does go on, whether we wish it to or not, and not playing the song won't really freeze time.

Idiots.

I don't listen to a lot of music, just the radio in the car to and from work. 92.5theriver.com - great station. They are doing a "pay for play" all this week; if people pledge at least $25 to the Red Cross they will play any (reasonable) request. Apparently David Bowie's "Heroes" is one of the most requested songs.

Some of those songs are ridiculous. Pink Floyd? The Beatles? Cat Effing Stevens? Man.

I've been listening to Randy Newman non-stop lately. He makes everything better.

I was at a party this weekend and the band started to sing that awful Alanis Morrisette song, "Ironic." I thought, "How tacky! What with the plane crashing, and all." The tackiness dawned on the band right before they sang that verse, and they stopped playing.

Ah, bureaucracy at its best.

Inane.

Someone suggested to me that they just through ObLaDi on because they figured it was finally their chance to get it out of their head.

I'd forgotten the verse in "Ironic" about the plane crashing.

Ah, AB, I would give cash money to hear you and rog discuss Randy Newman. rog hates Randy Newman with the white hot burning heat of a 1,000 suns.

Of course he likes fuckin' Utah Phillips so, you know, my husband can be a bit of a dope.

(Um, he doesn't like having sex with Utah Phillips, as far as I know. I just fucking hate fucking Utah fucking Phillips.)

rog has broken my little Randy-loving heart. But I too, fucking hate fucking Utah Phillips. Oddly enough, I love Ani, and isn't she a big fan of his?

-- Anonymous, September 18, 2001

Do you hate Urah Phillips, or do you hate the Ani DiFranco-fied version of his stuff?

Personally, I think Mr. Phillips is a little too self-important.

ani's a huge fan/promoter of Utah, mainly i think for his anarchist ideals or just her love of the folk genre

my hate for Randy outweighs my hate for Bobby Flay and dubbed Kaga combined

Oh rog, why must you hurt me so?

T: I think I hate him outright. He just gets on my nerves with all his crazy talk.

I have this CD called "Sing America" and it's a compilation of patriotic folk songs from the likes of John Denver to Marie Osmand etc. I put it on last night adn I got through one verse of America the Beautiful before I had to turn it off.

I hate him. Well, I hate everything of his owned by my husband and played on every long car trip EVER. Most of which is Ani-fied but I think there is one actual Utah-only album.

I too think he's self-important. I also think you can make a point about, oh, say, old gospel songs, without mocking every bit of Christianity ever as if being a Christian were akin to murdering babies in the street while naked and cackling evilly. Would he mock any other religion like that? No. But because Christianity is the religion of the white upper-classes that he thinks are keeping him down he feels that it's okay to trash their beliefs for entertainment value.

Uh, I have Utah issues. Seriously. I just made my own eyeball throb.

man. that list was pretty damn funny; I'm not really affected by most of those songs on the list. erm, what's up with Sugar Ray - When It's Over? besides the title? it's not about the end of the world or anything....ah well.

I've been listened to alot of Sigur Ros lately. that and dance music...I dunno. dancing makes me forget.

That list is too funny, although I quite agree that any song by Mudvayne should be avoided now and forever.

Pat Benetar can't do anything but help us, I say. She's a rock and roll hero.

Does anyone know if Clear Channel has reconsidered the list? Because I'm pretty sure I heard "When It's Over " on WNCI the other day.

Oh, they are KIDDING me with the Banning Pat Benatar crap, yes?

Please tell me they are. Otherwise, I just might cry. Because I love her more than Thin Mints, y'all.

Although, whilst I'm on my Pat Benatar theme, is it just me, or wouldn't you think they'd have Hell Is For Children on that list, if they were all set to get their panties in a wad in the first place?

H, I think the list was just a sort of guideline. They were encouraged not to play the songs, but the final decision is up to the individual stations.
