50mm Summlux Lense Hood

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Hey!

I am not crazy about the collapsible lense hood on my 50mm. I’m looking for something similar to my 35mm lense hood (#12504). This lense hood is solid and guarantees that something I bump my lense into won’t scratch the optics. The one on the 50mm collapses with little force. An improvement on that design would be to have a required quarter turn to lock it from collapsing.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Ilya

The easiest answer is to use a thick rubber band or double sided velcro in the space between the extended lens hood and the lens body. It works well and gives the hood a bit of "suspension" to better absorb bumps.

You could also buy an E46 rubber or metal hood from these chaps:

Darn the first link does not work. Tony, could I get you to delete it as the second gets you where you need to go.

Ilya,

In the past, I thought the same as you. I considered the sliding hood on the 50 Summilux flimsy and prone to collapsing. However, after searching for a solution, which included the older mount, and screw-on hoods for the current version (these obstruct the viewfinder), I have come to love the built-in hood. The hood does not easily collapse when you consider that most bumps are on one edge and the hood stays pretty much in place. Furthermore, the current lens looks less clumsy on the body. However, if you are interested, I do have screw-on hood, metal, 46mm somewhere in a drawer.

I believe the Contax (G1 and G2 lenses) hood for their 45F2 will fit on the E46 thread. Also keeps the sliding hood out of the way. Mainly available in chrome, but they had a run of black lenses too recently? You get a cap too I understand. Keeps the sliding hood of the 'lux out of the way.

Alternatively you can take glass out of a E46 filter and use two stacked for a makeshift hood.

Cheers.
