seeking experienced dog breeders for answer to questiongreenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
Hi,,,I am looking for someone who may have had an experience with a similar delemma. I bred my little poodle thinking she was current on her shots. I was sure!,,Well, I got to looking in my books and records and found she wasn't current. Now I am wanting to know if it is ok to give her shots now,,(already pregnant)or should I wait til pups are born. I sure am upset that she don't have her current shots because it is a protection for her and her forth-coming puppies. Of course I have looked in all the books I have,,no info on this special predicament. Will appreciate any information...or some source to research. Thanks,,,

Do you use a vet , the best bet would be to ask him or her. I "believe you can give a killed vacc but it depends on what you are giving. You can also call jeffers supply and ask them .Or any othere company that sells dog vaccs. My rule of thumb when breeding is if it's more than 6 months past there da2pp&lepto I give it again .

I would not give a pregnant dog any shots unless it is labled allright. As far as I know, there is only 1 parvo shot labled ok for pregnant dogs. Just keep the dog and pups away from any other people or dogs. There are some new vacs for pups that you can give pretty early now.http://www.lambriarvet.com has some excellent info on all the vacs available. I order from them.

I would just wait until after the puppies were born at this point then vaccinate the mother. Then start vaccinating the puppies at 6 weeks, booster at 8, 10, 13 and 16 weeks.

You could have your vet run a titres test on the bitch to see if she is immune anyway from her previous shots. Many shots last a lot longer than we think and some people don't follow the normal schedule of shots because they feel it is uneccesary and can result in immune- related diseases. They just do an annual titres test to see what the dog may need. You may find that the bitch has adequate protection which will be passed along to the pups and you won't have to give any of the shots.

Hi i am i breeder and i wouldnt worry one bit. You can give her the vaccinations 2 weeks before her do date and that can be crucial for the pups as it goes into her estrum(sp) which is the first 24 hours of milk that the mother gives to the pups FILLED with all the antibiotics for the pup. I will look in my books again and make sure this is correct but i am pretty sure it is.David

Given the current controversy that is going through the dog breeding community as to the safety of giving vaccinations to puppies after they are born, I would definitely not give them to them before they are born. There is growing evidence that it screws up their immune systems and causes immunilogical diseases in adulthood. This controversy is now being carried over into the people world and there is starting to be studies coming out to show that they aren't as safe as we were led to believe. When you consider how common asthma, ear infections and allergies are in young children nowadays in comparison to thirty or forty years ago when immunizations were not used, you have to sit back and wonder, what has changed? Two things, children are now routinely given immunizations and they are also routinely given flouride in their drinking water and their toothpaste. Flouride is actually a poison yet we accept it in our water supply. Anyway, that issue is a whole nother thread. I think we need to question how we are ingesting chemicals into our bodies routinely at doctors' advice.

Hi - I used to raise Schnauzers and Beagles and illness in them was rare, but it's been a few years. I agree with David and with Colleen. Theory seems to vary depending on who you talk to. Not all vets will agree on what to give when. I always vaccinated my pregnant bitches within the last month of pregnancy - my thinking was if the bitches immunity was up, so was the pups, whether unborn or nursing. However, there is the line of thought that this interfers with the pups natural ability to develope its own immunity. Talk to the vet you trust with your animals health care and follow his/her advice. Either way, your mom is probably not at risk if not around dogs who might be carriers of some disease. Good luck and happy puppies.

Straight from the DVM's mouth Rabies is OK Distemper can damage the puppies (it is only available as a modified live vaccine) Depending how overdue you are on her vaccines, you should be OK without Dianne
