Greenspun's SF History Forum is connected to several other websites. What were you looking at or for on google? That would help us track down the pictures.

Here's a good listing of photos of the 1989 quake damage. I still can't look at these pictures, so I haven't gone through them carefully. The thumbnails upset me enough.

If you use HotBot and hunt for "Loma Prieta" + "Bay Bridge" and check the include image box, you'll get a heckuva listing of sites.

Come Come Now. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as it could have been. It wasn't 1906 and it wasn't the East Bay Hills fire in 1991 where almost 3000 homes were burned to a crisp and of course it wasn't even a trifle of the World Trade Center terrorist attack. So go ahead and look at the pictures of 1989 Earthquake and thank your lucky stars that it wasn't anything worse.

Harry, please be nice.... For all you know, she may have had a friend or relative die in that earthquake. And that would drastically change anyone's perception of it, no matter how much worse damage is elsewhere. By your reasoning, we should thank our lucky stars that bin Laden's recent terrorist attacks didn't reach the millions killed in Hitler's holocaust.

Thanks, Scott!

I hope Harry stays on the board, though. He's got such a terrific fund of knowledge about San Francisco history, his input has been really helpful.

And, yes, I did lose something very important to me in the earthquake. If you want to read my narrative of what happened, I put it on A&E's Minute by Minute board, attached to the episode about the San Francisco Earthquake. (That was very, very hard to watch.) The stories from the other posters there are interesting in that they had such different takes on what was happening. I read scenes I was in the middle of that it took me a while to recognize.

I'm sorry, I don't agree with you one bit. First of all, Rosa never said she lost a family member or relative in the earthquake nor did she even imply it. She may have lost a friend or had property damage. OK, that's bad. But you can't equate the MURDER of 6 million Jews to the loss of 62 people in an Earthquake. Nor can you compare the loss of 62 people in the San Francisco Earthquake to the loss of approx. 250,000 people in the Chinese earthqake of 1976 or even the Earthquake in Turkey in 1999 which killed 17,000 people. And even the Afghan earthquake of 1998 killed 4000 people.

Oh, sir, you are gravely mistaken. So far as I am aware, no one on this board has had congress with footwear.
