books about goats--Know any good ones?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
We would like to buy a few goats, but don't know much about them. The library had only 2 books about them, one of which was solely about pygmies. Can you recommend any good books about goats? The kind I can say "I'm so glad I bought this book"? Thanks!

Jo, I have a book caller Raising Milk Goats the Modern Way. They have a series raising a lot of things the modern way. These books are by different authors. The one about goats is by Jerry Belanger I also have The Goatkeeper's Veterinary Book by Peter Dunn. It comes in handy also. But the best one is Raising Milk Goats the Modern Way."I'm so glad I bought this book." Linda

The raising goats the modern way is a good one to start out with. Also Goat Husbandry by David Mackenzie. Dairy Goats for pleasure and Profit by Harvey Considine and Dairy Goat Judging Techniques by the same author. The latter is very useful even if you will never go to a show, it helps to be able to recognize quality and what to look for in a goat. Then there are the two dairy goat periodicals, Dairy Goay Journal and United Caprine News. I recommend subscribing to both. You will learn all kinds of things from these that the books never cover.

caprinesupply.com has the Goatkeeping 101 series. The Modern Way books aren't very MODERN :) I love Harvey Considines book, and another less known oldy is Fundamentals of Improved Dairy Goat Management put out by Hall Press. Dr. Sam Guss also has an old great book out, I would love to buy a copy of this book if anybody sees one anywhere! For the very serious minded folks is Goat Medicine, my goat bible.Once you get your goats download saanendoah.com put it into a three ring binder, the most comprehinsive goat information out there! There is several goat books listed on e-bay right now under dairy goats, I can't remember the titles but seems like there is a couple that people have mentioned. You may want to check it out and perhaps save a few bucks.

Hi Jo, I have Raising Milk Goats the Modern Way, I will have Angie bring that to the Y and then I did hear that the book about Goat Medicine and health is the next best thing to have. I will bring Raising Milk Goats, and you can look at it and see if its what you'd like to purchase. See ya Monday. Love Karole

Don't forget to subscribe to The Dairy Goat Journal magazine. Also a few years back Countryside published another magazine called The Dairy Goat Guide. You might see if anyone would part with their old copies. I still have mine and re-ead them a lot too. Good Luck !!

Raising Milk Goats the Modern Way (1975) was enlarged and updated in 2000, and is now called Storey’s Guide to Raising Dairy Goats. There’s an ad for it on page 94 of the current Countryside.
