DALLAS (AP) - Vought Aircraft Industries is cutting 1,200 jobs, about 20 percent of its work force, citing a falloff in the sale of Boeing commercial aircraft.

Fidelity Investments, the country's largest mutual fund company, plans to fire 760 employees -- 2.3 percent of its total work force -- as its fees for brokerage and management have dropped in the face of a 19-month drop in stock prices. Bristol-Myers to Cut From DuPont

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. will cut about 40 percent of its worldwide work force from former DuPont Pharmaceuticals, a spokesman said.

Job offers will be extended during the next few weeks to about 3,000 of DuPont Pharmaceuticals' 5,000 workers worldwide, said Bristol-Myers Squibb spokesman Wilson Grabill.

MILLEDGEVILLE - Vought Aircraft Industries, based in Dallas, Texas, announced Monday it will lay off 1,200 workers, but how those layoffs will impact the Milledgeville and Perry plants was unclear Tuesday. The layoffs involve about 20 percent of Vought's work force and will affect all of the company's plants and every level of its work force, said Vought spokeswoman Lynn Warne.

Hewlett-Packard announced it has cut additional jobs in the U.S. as part of its ongoing cost-cutting efforts.

A representative for the Palo Alto, Calif.-based computer behemoth said the company laid off an unspecified number of employees in the United States this week. The layoffs are in addition to the 6,000 job cuts worldwide that HP announced earlier this year, before its bid to acquire onetime rival Compaq Computer.

The layoffs are also not apparently part of the estimated 15,000 layoffs that will occur after the merger, as the latest cutbacks do not relate to the merger, the representative said. Additionally, Compaq will lay off 8,500 employees separately.

Dayco in Ocala lays off 60 workers

OCALA — In response to cutbacks in the nation's automotive industry, Dayco Products in Ocala had layoffs this week.

The 60 employees included in the layoff were notified on Tuesday and Wednesday. The local plant, a division of Amherst, N.Y.-based Mark IV Automotive, now employs approximately 520 people.

BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- Sun Microsystems Inc. will lay off about 250 people in Colorado as it cuts its global workforce because of the soured economy.

Almost all the cuts will be at Sun's business park in Broomfield, Sun spokesman Prentiss Donohue said. The Palo Alto-based company is cutting about 3,900 of its 43,000 employees overall.

HELSINKI, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Nokia said on Monday it had reduced planned job cuts at its mobile phone plant in Salo, Finland, to 130 instead of an earlier announced 260 as some staff had agreed to retire or change jobs. BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) Bethlehem Steel has told union officials it plans to cut 2,000 jobs as it tries to pull itself out of bankruptcy, the union said.

Mercury News Two of the valley's premier names in computing may be heading ever so quietly down Layoff Lane.

IBM last week told 80 workers at its San Jose software division to start looking for new work, according to one of those pink-slipped. That's roughly 5 percent of the workforce at IBM's Santa Teresa Labs.

Apple Computer, meanwhile, has been making small job cuts across a range of departments. That word comes from an Apple employee as well as from a number of independent, Apple-related Web sites.

Layoffs are nothing new in this economy. But these are noteworthy not just for the high profiles the companies cut, but also for their stealthiness. Management at both firms is working very, very hard to keep the cuts quiet.
