I had to get on here and pimp Ryan Adam's new album, Gold. Put it in the CD changer with his earlier solo album Heartbreaker and Whiskytown's Stranger's Almanac, and you have quite possibly the most perfect night of Alt.country ever.

Check him out on SNL this weekend (11/10). I suspect that he'll be singing the first single from the album- New York, New York.

Ooo, good, name to go with New York, New York. They've been playing that on the Good Station locally for months and I could never catch the name.

So you guys might be good people to ask. Sometimes they play a song with this guy singing about toast. It's the funniest damn song ever with him screaming "Toast!" in the chorus like a metalhead and I really need to know who it is.

Hey guys, I just wanted to pop in and tell you that in addition to Adam Duritz, he also has Elton John guest on his album and he dates Winnona Ryder. There goes all his indie cred. On the plus side, he drinks at Boardners in Hollywood, which is my favorite bar. Even the MOC has lifted a few beers there.

Just saw his video for "New York, New York." Does the boy NOT own a comb? Seriously.

Also, he has several shots of the twin towers. I wonder why he opted to leave them in. Not that I think he shouldn't have, I'd just like to know the reasoning.

Heard Gold for the first time this past weekend - wasn't incredibly impressed. I guess because Heartbreaker was just SO good and I love it SO much.

He may be greasy (in fact, he is), but I have to confess that I find him strangely attractive. That said, I wasn't hugely impressed with Gold. I do like Heartbreaker though.

HB, I found this so interesting... I saw the video a couple of weeks ago, and was so buoyed by seeing the WTC in the background. It never occurred to me that R.A. would want to edit them out. I assumed that he didn't change the video because the towers figured so prominently into the footage - they would have had to re-shoot half of it.

Cannot go without a day of listening to this mans work. A little of everything in his album...I just saw him in San Francisco with his girlfriend opening for him..damn..he was on fire amazing. Hey - Ryan is incredible, and though I don't know if he's going to "revolutionize rock and roll" as Rolling Stone says, he's at least created his own genre of music - and it kicks ass. As to the Gold/Heartbreaker debate, Gold's good, it's just slightly more mainstream sounding than Heartbreaker.. Oh, and, in order to have the perfect nght of Alt. country, you'll have to pop in Whiskeytown's Pneumonia as well.

Stone me now, folks... but I just can't think of Ryan Adams as alt.country. Not in a pure way. I think "alt.country" has become the catch-all term for everything that meets some or any of the following descriptions: roots rock, Americana, folk, Texas country, "No Depression", bluegrass-influenced...

I've only heard abit of Ryan Adams music, soooo I have no opinion besides yeah; I didn't think it was really alt-country ...I think it was the New York something or other video I caught.

Anyway, I personally like my new termed genre of 'gothic country' for this one group I found on an indie site; Japancakes. see it, buy it, love it.

Oh yeah, would Lucinda Williams and the Scud Mountain Boys be considered alt-country? I was thinking maybe...even I get screwed up on genre; reason I make up my own.

Ryan Adams is clearly not alt.country. Most bands who are classified alt.country aren't alt.country. It's more of a way of describing a broad category of music you like. Because, really, Uncle Tupelo was about the only band that you could call alt.country when listening to there music. It really was a combination of alternative and country (except the third album)

The rest of the descriptions seem to me to be more specific, i.e. roots rock=John Mellencamp/Georgia Satellites; Texas country = Robert Earl Keen/Jerry Jeff Walker; folk = Townes Van Zandt, etc....

I would put Lucinda and The Scud Mountain Boys into something along the lines of "folk country", even though Lucinda will rock out on occassion.

I call everything that could be on a KGSR compilation CD alt.country, when really, like Chris said, most of it isn't. It's just easier that way, because I know if someone says: "alt.country? What's that?" I want nothing to do with them.

I don't know about Alt/country. I mean he's from N.C. so he's got this southern feel to his crooning sense. There is more country on Heartbreaker than Gold, obviously. But Gold just rocks! I feel the Stones, The Who, Neil Young. The guy just doesn't give a %#*&!! about what anyone thinks. He does what feels right. This is also obvious in his work. By the way, I'm not familiar with Whisketowns work. Can anyone recommend my 1st cd by them? Thanks. Pat.
