I'm screaming for ice cream!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Is it possible to be a Luddite and to have your cake (or rather your ice cream) and eat it, too? I'm looking for recipes for making ice cream - sans ice cream machine. I'm picturing bowls inside of bowls, lots of ice and patience, and some rock salt. Am I way off? If anybody can help me out with ice cream recipes, tips, or at least point me in the right direction for finding the information I'm seeking, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Mitch had a great idea he posted on another forum, Country Families, here on Lusenet: Put your ice cream ingredients in a quart size ziplock bag, and then put ice and some rock salt in a gallon size ziplock bag, put the well-sealed quart bag in the well-sealed gallon size bag, and have fun shaking, squeezing, and dancing up and down and sideways until it's ready to eat.

Check out his thread for the particulars of the recipe.

I've read about an activity for children - fill a 1 pound (?) coffee can with the ingredients for ice cream, seal well and put inside a 5 pound can. Fill the space with layers of ice and salt and seal. Then roll the cans for 20 minutes, I think. I have the exact recipe somewhere... So, yes! It's possible! :o)

Add this to the recipe suggesting coffee can ice cream. Be sure to duct tape the inside coffee can lid shut to keep out all salt. Also, using jello vanilla pudding speeds up the process if you are impatient.

Found the recipe!!

Ingredients: 1 cup whole milk 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla Pinch of salt Rock salt Crushed ice cubes Coffee cans: 1 small (12 oz) and 1 big (39 oz) with lids Optional: 1/2 cup chopped fresh fruit or whole berries 1/4 cup chopped nuts Crushed candy bars

Pour the whole milk and cream into a large bowl. Stir. Sprinkle sugar into mixture, add salt and vanilla and stir. Add fruit, nuts or crushed candy. Pour mixture into the small coffee can, leaving approx 2 inches or more space from top of can. Put on lid and tape shut. Place small can inside the large one and sprinkle about 1 1/2 cups crushed ice around the small can. Add a couple of hands full of salt. Alternate ice and salt until the large can is full. Put on lid and roll can back and forth (here's where the kids come in handy!!) for about twenty minutes! Enjoy!!
