If I try to sell something on eBay, I get the following Netscape error message before I can get off the first sell page: "Unable to start a java applet. Can't find 'java40.jar' in your classpath. Read the release notes and install 'java40.jar' before restarting." Anyone ever hear of any of this? Thank you.

I'd e-mail the webmaster for e-bay, it sounds like the problem's on their end. Do you see this java error at any other time, or just when using ebay?

Do you by chance have java disabled on your browser? From the netscape Edit menu -> preferances -> advanced. See if java is on.

Thank you Sandie and Gary for your input. Am starting to think the problem is on eBay's end, as that is the only place this error is encountered. Have notified the eBay webmaster, but unfortuneately tech support there is going from bad to worse. Checked my browser and java is on. It may be time to say good bye to eBay and hello to Yahoo. Yahoo couldn't be much worse in terms of computer problems.

Think I may have atleast temporarily solved this by changing my browser from Netscape to Internet Explorer. Thanks again to Sandee and Gary. No thanks to eBay, who only gets in a hurry for their "Power Sellers."

As good as Netscape is (I used it for the longest time)... it is far too "buggy" to use without problems. Not really bugs, but incompatibility issues... stick with Internet Explorer.

I have written several Java applets. I've even taught classes on Java.

Java is a computer programming language.

A Java applet is a java program that can run within your browser.

It sounds like you either have your java stuff turned off, or your java40.jar (the file that contains the base java stuff that is required for a browser to run an applet) is corrupted.
