I was baptized catholic and received my first holy communion, however I've never received confirmation. My fiance' is a confirmed catholic. Do I need to be confirmed in order to marry in the catholic church? Also, does my maid of honor have to be a confirmed catholic as well? Thank you, Priscilla

My opinion is that the answer is, "Yes, you need to be confirmed" -- unless your wedding is so soon in the future that you lack the time to prepare for Confirmation.

Here is what the Code of Canon Law says:
"Canon 1065
"Section 1. If they can do so without serious inconvenience, Catholics who have not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation are to receive it before being admitted to marriage.
"Section 2. It is strongly recommended that those to be married approach the Sacraments of Penance and the most Holy Eucharist so that they may fruitfully receive the Sacrament of Marriage."

Priscilla, I cannot think of a "serious inconvenience" to stop you from receiving Confirmation, other than lack of time to prepare [to be educated, etc.] for it, probably according to your bishop's judgment. The bishop can "depute" your pastor to administer Confirmation to you, in his absence.

So, you can validly be married without being confirmed, but it is not recommended, because the graces of Confirmation will aid you in married life. I came across the following thoughts elsewhere on the Internet. I don't know the name of the author:
"Some commentators hold that receiving confirmation is a grave obligation ... . [They] relate confirmation to the strengthening of faith needed to respond to the graces of the Sacrament of Marriage. [One writer] relates the obligation to the fulfilling of the purpose of marriage. Since this includes the acceptance of children and their education in the worship of God, parents must be confirmed in the same faith in which they will raise their children. The confirmed Catholic is charged with communicating the faith by word and example. In marriage this is primarily realized through the community of the whole of life wherein the spouses assist each other by mutual sanctification and growth in faith. It is also accomplished by the nurture of the life of faith of their children."

At first I used to get bent out of shape with Alex and his nonsense. Now I just get tickled! I mean, how often do we have the honor of welcoming comedians to this site?
