making butter

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I will be milking for the first time this December. We have a Guernsey cow we have raised since she was two days old,(now almost three years old). She is due to calf at Christmas. I have read and re-read the forum on milking, but I can't seem to find much about making butter. Do I need a churn? What about using a Kitchen-Aid mixer? Any recipes and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

there is plenty in the about making butter,, you dont NEED a "churn",, just soming to agitate the cream with,, for small batches,, a mason jar and lid rolled back and forth,,,, you can use a hand mixer,, not sure about the Kitchen Aide mixer,,since I dont have one. I bought a 2 quart churn on ebay for 50 bucks,, and it works great.

Rebecca, look under Kitchen (Dairy, etc) in the archives. We've had a couple of good threads about butter recently. If these don't answer all your questions, post again. Best of luck! :o)

All I use to make butter is the kitchen aid mixer with the wisk beater, it takes about 5 minutes if that. Just watch when it starts to turn to butter that you turn the speed down or it will splash all over your kitchen. Good luck with your cow! Cara

Another blender-butter maker here! Quick, easy and you can sit and read while it's "churning"!!

We have a Jersey and we use a had mixer to make butter. Only takes a couple of minutes to whip the cream into butter. In fact the cream never gets to the whipped cream stage - it goes stright to butter. Hope all goes well for you both you and your cow :-)
