Update on bred milker (Goats - Dairy)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Just had to give an update on my Nubian who I was milking. So many gave me such good advice on what do do if she was bred. Well, she had triplets! I had milked her the night before, and noticed she was acting a little strange. Next morning, I knew why. She is doing fine, and so are the little ones. Thank God I had the colostrum in the freezer. The little I had seemed to be enough and they are frisky little critters now. I talked to the lady I got her from, and she had a 3 1/2 month old buck that bred her whole herd. She said he was a keeper now, since all she had was triplets or quads. Next question, at what age do I wien them?

Congrats! I can't wait for new kids here. If you are bottlefeeding them, you can wean at 3 months. That's when I do. Some do earlier, some later. Really, whatever works for you. If you're letting mama raise them, she'll wean them when ready or you can take the kids away at 3 months & wean them.

Congrats on your new babies! Triplets and quads are due to the does ovulating with extra eggs, not to the buck that sired the quads. A good feeding program is probably more to thank. I wean about three months or older, depemding on the size and weight of the kid.

Rebekah stole my answer ;) The gal should have kept the does:) Management is the key with triplets, healthy quads is management but quads in general are genetics. Quads run in families. Vicki
