William, I could loan you my 3 kids. Maybe you could bang some sense into their heads. I'm not having much luck lately!

I'll ask my brother about this. He has a nice set up.

Hello William,

I have seen people use a piece of railroad track. Maybe you can find a piece of it and mount it on a tree stump or something?

Sincerely, Ernest

Another handy idea I got from a magazine . . .

Drill a small hole on the edge of your workbench, and install an old valve w/ rod into it. A mini area to bash to hearts content. You can remove at will.

I live in the central part of Texas. I also have been looking for a good heavy weight anvil. You probably already know that you can purchase anvils from collectors but they are very expensive - $500 - $1,500 ea. In years past I,ve seen a few at flee markets-trade days. Until I can find what I need I'm using an 18in section of railing from an old rail road track.

Good luck

Purchasing an Avil from Habor Freight would be a waste of time and money. I have experienced using one of the China manufactured anvils sold by Habor Freight. It started to chip off and was a made of a soft metal, which gave way to the medium blows of a 2 pound hammer. The blows, from the hammer, caused the face of the anvil to become dimpled and uneven. a series of A section of 65 pound railroad rail would much better serve you purpose until you are able to locate a old anvil of an American, England or Eurropean manufacture. Have some one to cut you a point on one end of the rail and grind the heel surface flat.

My elderly mother has two anvils for sale that were used by my father and grandfather in the saw hammering business. I don't know what the technical term for them is, but I would call them slab anvils. One is 10"x48"x4" and the other is 12"x48"x3". They are hard faced anvils. One we know was purchased from R Hoe as Mother has the receipt. They anvils are located in Bluefield, WV. Contact me at email if you are interested or know where we might advertise them to find a buyer.
