I have an idea for a chicken feeder and I'll need a big piece of tin. But I have no idea where to get some plain, flat tin.

Is this something that has to be special ordered?

Open your phone book to steel suppliers or comercial roofing and siding suppliers. How big is big? I know you can buy rolls of flashing (galvanised)from most lumber stores. What gauge of steel? Around here most steel is a stock item but I'd assume the more remote you are the more you special order. Web based phone books can help a lot too.

I dont think you want Tin, galvanised metal would be a better and more cost effective solution. You can get these at a metal yard or check out your heating and plumbing contrctor. they might have one.

With all the new technologies available in the printing world, I'm not sure this still stands true..but..you used to be able to pick up tin sheets at newspapers for free.

Go to a Plumbing & Heating Supply. Ask for the metal to make duct work. Its pretty cheap and comes in many sizes

Why would I not want tin? Is there something toxic with tin?

I can can get pieces of galv. sheet metal in 3ft by 8ft sheets in a hardware store here in maine. It's not a big store like Home Depot. Just a good hardware store that every country person needs. My father and I get tim from the $599 carport builders. Their tin comes in different colors. The top piece of tin in each bundle has writing on it (shipping info.). They do not use them and sell them at very reasonable prices.

Doesn't the galvanized metal last longer than tin? I thought that it would hold off rust longer than plain tin. Maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, I am able to get both at my local lumber yard. Good luck with your feeder!

I bought a sheet of galvanized steel that was 8' long by 4'wide at Sothern States for $19.00. It makes a great roof for my chicken coop!
