I'd be grateful for input on Leica M4. Unfortunately, I don't know th e specific model. A collector'sestate is selling an M4 and since I'm a user rather than a collector, is this a comfortable camera to shoot with? I do have a new M6 TTl so the lenses between the two models are interchangeable. If there are ballpark figures for a fair prices, I'd appreciate hearing that info as well. Thanks for your time and advice.

The *functional* differences between the M4 and your M6TTL that might have some significance to you are:M4 has no built-in light meter for daylight or flash
M4 has no framelines for 28mm or 75mm lenses (can be added, expensive)
M4 has smaller shutter speed dial, numbered in the opposite direction
M4 has a self-timer
M4 has no rubber ring on eyepiece (can be added, about $75)
M4 has no "hot" shoe for flash (has "cold" shoe to mount the flash but synchronization cord must be plugged into PC socket)
Prices for an M4 are based mostly on cosmetic condition, range currently from about $1000-$2000 from user condition to mint. If this particular camera has been sitting un-used for a year or more, it is likely that it will need a CLA for the shutter to be functional at the slow speeds, and in any case the M4 (1967-1970, 1974-75)is old enough that it will probably be a good idea to have it CLA'd regardless. Figure about $275 and a month or two wait for that...be pleasantly surprised if either is less.

Hello Rob,The M4 would make a nice addition to your M6 TTL, I agree with Jay that a CLA may be in order. I purchased an M4 in Excellent + condition from a camera store for $1100 and sent it to Leica for a CLA. The camera performs great and I use it quite often. If you are in need of another body then you might consider another M6 unless you really want the M4, I sure did, They have become quite collectible and for users maybe not as sensible because of price. I think a nice M6 can be found for less than a nice M4.
Good Luck TG

An M4 would make a nice second camera. You simply transfer the meter readings from the M6. That way you can have your two favorite focal lengths already mounted up. The M6 finder frames can be installed, I think for about $150, if needed. The M4 finder does not have the flare problems of the M6. Some folks like the uncluttered look of the M2/M3/M4 finders. So if the price is right, there are good reasons to get it.
