M6 meter problem,

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

At 400 asa it works great until I reach 1/30 shutter speed, from there to longer speeds only one arrow shows, then change asa and I can use slower shutter speeds, but then go to higher asa and then I canīt, my tests are properly done, for example:

ASA 400

1/125 at f/8 OK

1/30 at F/16 and it only shows one arrow even if I go to F/22

change asa to 50

1/15 at f/4 OK now it works at this speed

1/4 at f/8 and again the problem only one arrow and not move from it.

Iīm afraid it needs a clean in the electronic system or worst some repair.

Iīve been using it this morning, changing asa and this seems that problem is marginaly getting better, now I can read at 1/4 at 400 asa, I think it can be a moisture problem, Iīll leave camera in the sun to dry it for a wile and see if it improbes.

If you leave the camera in the sun, to bake out, PLEASE make sure the lens is not pointing into the sun. I set items on a hot water heater when I want them to bake out. It is a nice even heat, and works at night. Good thing is the shutter is manual, so the camera will still work for Christmas. Merry Christmas. :)

Roberto:

It can also be a problem with the electrical contacts inside the ISO dial. In addition to regular exercize of all shutter speeds, it is a good idea to regularly exercize the ISO wheel on the M6. About every- other month I spin the ISO dial from end to end a few times to help keep the contacts polished and operational.

:) Chers,

Good idea Jack, and Mark thankīs a lot to you recomendations.

I did took lens off, took baseplate off too, open back dook and leave it in the sun for one hour aprox.; move the shuter speed dial, the asa dial as you recomend me Jack; now the meter is working very well; I can use any asa and speeds up to 1 sec. can be readable; the two arrows blink when the cap is on, and when more than 1 f stop of under/over exposure, and when there is not enough ligth for the meter to work (a thing this camera didnīt do before).

At one second Iīm still having trouble in very low ligth, but I think is the meter limit, any way Iīll give it an extra toast, and use dry air to remove dust from inside.

Merry Christmas to all!

yes to all above. If your electronics are not shot (they do not sound llike it), then it is dirt dust. Clean the back hinged plate contacts, exercise your dials, etc. One other, which probably is NOT RECOMENDED blindly ( I did it as I was exasperated enough to send it in for overhaul, if it did not fix it) -- remove the shutter speed dial, and blow air (which, of course, blows a tiny particle deeper somewhere) down into that area. My symptoms were of a non-changing (appratenly unrepsonsive) meter on a single shutter speed only.

Oh, some early M6-s had meter problems. Cost a bit for a new one, but there is actually a new board in one of mine. If I remember, it was flakey/erratic left and right arrows.

Good day sun shines

I need to laugh

and when the sunīs up

I got something I can laugh about

my meter is on

and just a half stop

over my 5° meter-spot

Yes it just needed some under the sun burns, I even used B to keep curtains open and let sun touch the silycon cell meter, now is just half stop faster than my Minolta IV with the 5° reflected meter
