I Done It!! Made butter!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I bought the pint of whipping cream and poured it in a quart jar. Put one beater on my wife's mixer and began to whip the cream. In almost exactly 30 minutes I had BUTTER!!!! Poured it out. Squeezed out the milk. Washed it. Salted it. And put it in a butter bowl. Try it. You'll like it!

It works like a charm, right?! Did that by accident once trying to make whipped cream when I was kid.

I just stumbled across this excellent board. Butter is really easy. I grew up in Northern Ontario with a herd of dairy goats (among other critters) and we used to separate the milk, put cream in a canning jar, and just shake shake shake! We had butter in not too much time. Wash, salt, and you're done. More affluent neighbours had nifty contraptions with gears and paddles, but just a plain ol' Mason jar works fine too.

I've never tried this but I have a question. How do you wash and salt the butter?

The butter will stick together like wax. You can mash it with your hand or anything such as the bottom of a jar. Anything that will press out the milk. I put mine in a bowl after it made in the jar. Then squezzed and pressed and poured off the milk. Then I ran the water directly on it in the bowl until it (the water)remained clear. Then I just sprinkled salt on it and worked it in.
