and what about my dream, it could also transfer focus from the lens to the body, as well as focal length masks for 75 and 50, 90 and 135, yes it is a challenge for any designer, and could be a dream of many Leica users.

Well Mr. Watson, they did make a 1.4 converter for the M camera! It only got to the preproduction stage before they killed it but there are a few samples out there. One sold on eBay early last year. Leica was considering discontinuing the 135 lenses and bringing out the 1.4x converter. It keys up the 135 framelines and was designed for use with the 90/2.8 to give you a 135/4. dates from the same period as the M75/2.4 APO. They are out there and available for purchase. I think I remember the 1.4x converter going for under $2K US which is probably what you would have to pay for a new one so....

John:

Sorry, the sun was in my ears. What was that about a 75/2.4 APO?

There WAS a Komura 2x converter for LTM cameras. Mine works pretty well, although I seldom use it. I think there also was am M model, but I have no idea what frame lines it brought up.

Yes there was a 75/2.4 APO lens for the M that was made in very low numbers. Whether it was a preproduction lens that never got any further or a military special order I cannot remember (I am at my mother's and far from my reference books). They do come up for sale once in every ten or so blue moons (not cheap).

I remeber that Leica M 1.4X converter offered on eBay. I don't think it sold (the reverse was not met). I think I heard somewhere that about 10 or so were made, so don't hold your breath waiting for one to surface. As far as the 75/2.4 M apo lens, Lager has one pictured in Vol II (Lenses) in the atypical M lenses section (along with a 66 mm M lens prototype). To say this is rare is an understatement. I have seen various Leica prototype and military lenses offered for sale from time to time. But I have NEVER seen a 75/2.4 lens offered for sale. Don't hold your breath for this one either!

Some outfit was offering a 2x converter for the M-- I *think* it was Cambridge Camera, but I am not sure. Saw the ad in SHUTTERBUG. Was wondering if anyone tried it.

I have a Komura 2X in M-mount - it brings up the 50 line but does RF couple the lens correctly. I mostly use it with my 90-cron but not much at that. Still, I wouldn't sell it. For some reason it's hard to sell M optics whether I use them or not.

I have the Komura 2X converter (that I bought new, a number of years ago), which comes with F and R caps, case, and a continuous variable viewfinder to show the framelines for the focal length set on the VF. My experience with this item is that it converts outstanding Leica lenses into mediocre lenses, with the effective loss of two stops of speed. In addition, the frames shown in the VF are grossly off (no where near correct. Also, these are expensive because they are desired by Leica collectors.

Altogether, the Komura 2X is an item you won't miss not having.

Was that 75mm f/2.4 Apo made before or after the introduction of the 75mm Summilux?

Well, seems that any thing worth to be set into a Leica ougth to have the same name on it.

Just curious; how long was this converters you talk here, the Leica and the Komura.

Your guess is as good as mine. The lens is pictured in Lager but there is no information on the date of manufacture, optical layout etc. It probably has a special ELCAN SN, which wouldn't tell you when it was made.
