skunk remedy?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My husband remembers reading a recipe for skunk remedy in an old issue of Countryside, but of course he doesn't remember what issue.

Last night we were out with the pup & the wee one to look at stars & smelled Mr. Skunk - one of these days we are going to need that recipe!!!

Can anyone remember what issue the recipe was in? Or does anyone have a recipe?

THANK YOU!!

Don't know what recipe Countryside had, but my dad used to use tomatoes on our hound dog when he got into a stinker. He would open a jar of mother's can tomatoes and rub in on the pouch. He said it had something to do with the acid in the tomatoes. Seemed to work on the odor, but not on the dog getting on a skunk.

This fall I had my dog play with a skunk and had to do a rapid serch for the de skunk recipe! I found it in the older messages and used 1 pint Hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and a teaspoon liquid dish soap. Mix in a bucket it will bubble. Then saturate the fur well with mixture and then rinse. I doubled the recipe and mixed into his fur well, then rinsed. I then shampood him well with people shampoo. Most of the smell was neutralized. You could still smell some skunk but he was tolerable and able to be in the house! I also have used "Hair Creame Rinse" for people on my older dog before I knew about this recipe. This was by far the best results I have found. Just be sure to avoid the dogs eyes. I always keep extra hydrogen peroixde around now for "just in case" by the way my dog has extremely sensitive skin and was not bothered by this mixture. Good Luck Denise

Its in the archives under pet care, but here goes again:Mix one pint hydrogen peroxide with 1/3 cup baking soda and a squirt of dish detergent. Mix well and apply to dog being careful to keep out of eyes and mouth. It will be quite foamy . Rub around well and than rinse off well with warm water. It certainly is less messy than tomato juice and much more effective. It works because it neutralizes the acid of the skunk spray....a chemical reaction. I have given this recipe to many people with much sucess. Good luck. By the way , I originally got this from an old Countryside Magazine and keep it posted on my refrigerator.

All answers so far are great when dog gets sprayed. Main thing is to have acidic tomatoe juice handy. Hunted coon for 30+ years and first 20 were with dogs who learned from one encounter with Pepe and no further problems. Last dog was a Black & Tan with a nose as good as any bloodhound. Many nights were when I wished that I had a pickup truck instead of a car! But those are stories for a chat room of hillbilly hunters. hmm has no problem yet. Strong odor in the area means that Pepe met up with something else that he didn't like such as a ferral cat. As an aside in this entry, live traps were set in October and one morning had a small male skunk. Took a lot of thinking to sort out how to open the trap without a sudden surprise. Pepe on his way OK. Next night, out to have a look around and there were TWO skunks in the livetrap! Same male and his little sister!

Hi! Forget the tomatos, then the dog just smells like a skunky pizza! LOL I'm a retired Vet Tech and here's what we used in our clinic for many years: 2 Cups Hydrogen Peroxide; 1/2 Cup Baking Soda; 2 Cups White Vinegar and 1 cup very warm water(double the recipe for a really BIG dog). The mixture will be really COLD without the water. Saturate the dog, leave on for 5 minutes. Rinse well and repeat if the poor dog really got it good! Also, it bears mentioning that this is not just a cosmetic problem. If your dog gets sprayed in the face, skunk spray is dangerous to the eyes. Not only can your dog seriously injure it's eyes by the frantic thrashing and rubbing, the spray itself is caustic. Rinse the eyes well and call your Vet. Hope this gets you prepared. Not fun at all! :) LQ

So sorry, forgot to put in to shampoo dog first with a good shampoo, pay attention to rinsing the eyes. Have fun! LOL LQ

1 quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup baking soda, 2-3 tbs. of dawn dish soap, shake and spray. Works every time for ANY smell (including bucky smell from does, goats that is).
