Just another day at the farmgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
When I was a kid dad liked to take the family around to the dairy farms in our county. Dad knew all the farmers and they knew him.One day we went to the Watt farm which was between Castle Hill and Frenchville Maine.I always liked going to the dairy's because even in the winter the barns were warm feeling. And I enjoyed watching the milking going on and if there were new born calves all the better.
When we got to the Watt Farm veryone got out except for Mum who liked to sit in the car and read her True Confessions magazine. When we walked into the barn there Mr.Watt was in there with a couple of other men who I did not know. All the men walked with each other from cow to cow talking about cows and calves. My brothers Little Jim and Bobby followed the men while I sort of hung back hoping to spot a new calf or even a barn kitten. I had no luck so I caught up to everyone just as they stopped behind a cow. One of the men sat a bucket down behind the cow. I was wondering where Mr.Watt got those neat plastic gloves that he was putting on. I was shocked to see that he could pull them all the way up to his shoulders. I just thought those were groovy. The men were talking about a calf being stuck. Us boys looked at each other in shock as Mr.Watt stuck his arm deep inside the cow. I remember looking at my two brothers faces and realizing that the look on their faces matched the way my face felt which was all twisted with the creeps. Dad put the plastic gloves on and he reached in. Even though I was shocked I was not as shocked as my brother Bobby was. Bobby gasped and said, "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh Vaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh i'm going to tell Mum what you're doing." Bobby ran out of the barn towards the car with me right behind him. Bobby was yelling "Mum, MUm you wait until I tell you what Dad did" Bobby got in the car and I climbed in after him. Mum was laughing at us because we were both so excited but I am so glad that Bobby got to tell her because it has left us with a memory that we laugh about everytime we go near a dairy or even a cow.
Bobby was very excited by what he had seen. Mum finally got Bobby to calm down enough so that he could tell her what happened. Mum asked Bobby what had happened. Bobby said, "Dad stuck his hand up the cows butt." Mum said,"What did the cow say?" Bobby said, "The cow said MOOOOOOORRRRRE! MOOOOOOORRRRRRE."
Poor Bobby, he was only three-years-old at the time and here he is thirty-seven years later and still being taunted by his siblings about that day.
