Isn't there a Leica Photo Gallery in NYC right by Tamarkin's?

Stefan: Welcome to the big apple!! The Leica gallery is located at 670 Broadway and the telephone # is 212 7776960. It is run by a charming couple, Rose and Jay Deutsch. Call in advance for times and details. They have nice books, mementos, etc.. on sale B&H photo, the Macy's of photography, is on 33rd Street and 9th Avenue. They are not open on Saturdays but a trip to this "institution", if only to browse, is worth it. Ken Hansen Photographic, at 509 Madison Avenue (tel# 212 3170923) is the mecca for serious Leicaphiles-both collectors and users. Ken and his staff are very knowledgeable and the prices are very very fair. Moreover they are scrupulously honest and stand by the product. This is a must. Good luck. (8>))-- AlbertPS. You should also visit " "Ground Zero" but remember NO photographs. Don't even try it, as the police will not only confiscate your film but arrest you. They are not in the mood for games.

I was in NYC in early December and had a had time selecting shows to see. I had a day and a half and could have spent two weeks going to new shows, openings, book signings, and lecture-slide shows. It was a bit overwhelming actually. This is a great guide. Photography in New York http://www.photography-guide.com
BTW, I shot for about two hours at Ground Zero ( actually got below the slurry wall for about a minute) with the help of ironworkers doing recovery work. I wasn't arrested. What a relief!

Stephan, there are a lot of good photo shows going on right now. Let's see... there's a small gallery show on Robert Frank, the ICP has an exhibit on North Vietnamese photographers from the Vietnam war, the Whitney has some recent Irving Penn nudes, there's an exhibit of Bellocq's photos of Storyville prostitutes, the Leica gallery is showing work by Vikor Kolar...too much to list...I would recommend checking out the Photography in NY Guide online or buy yourself a hard copy of the guide when you get here-- it's published monthly and you can get it in any of the larger newsstands. It lists everything. Or pick yourself up a copy of Time Out NY or the Village Voice. They both feature comprehensive listings of galleries and museums. Enjoy your trip.

Leica Gallery is very exceptional. Of course it's rather convenient that it's right beside Tamarkin's you know :)

The show in Grand Central Station of huge (larger than life size) Polaroid photos of people at Ground Zero is well worth a visit. No problem taking pictures there! I took nearly a roll (Portra 800l) of people looking at the pictures with my M6.

There is a Magnum exibition at the N.Y. Historical Society (Central Park West and 77th Street). Magnum had a meeting in N.Y. on September 10th. That's why so many Magnum Photographers covered the tragedy on 9/11.

Visit the Peter Beard "Carnets Africains" exhibit at The Time is Always Now gallery, 476 Broome Street (in SoHo). The most amazing photos and mixed media works of one of the most interesting periods of 20th century Africa. Truly amazing.
