Buck Fertility Question (Goats - General)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I've recently acquired a young Nubian buck that appears to have a botched banding job. One testicle remains sort of plastered up against his abdomen. He exhibits bucky behavior (& smell). Do any of you goat folks have any experience, direct or otherwise, with such a situation? Any successful breeding? I'm concerned that higher body temperatures may reduce his fertility.

Response to Buck Fertility Question

I would think that in the heat of summer and early fall, down here in the south that he would have all dead sperm. But once the weather cools off the bucks carry their testicles up pretty high, so yes I think he could give you some kids. Odd is that you are wanting to use a buck for breeding whom somebody else had deemed unworthy so banded him? Also with lots of bucks being very inexpensive why not find a good one? Vicki

Response to Buck Fertility Question

Or could it simply be that he has improperly descended testicles? If so, that's definitely not a trait you want in your lines.

I am very new to the art of goat herding and think I will have enough challenges with out asking for more. If you like the buck make him a pet and get another buck that from external observation has all the working parts without any visual problems.
