I am looking to buy a winder for my M6ttl.Any advise?

I would like to be able to turn it off and just use the manual wind when I need the quietness,but not have to take the motor off.Is this possible?

Be careful, the latest M6TTL produced don't accept the previous Motor-M anymore.

You will have to try one on your camera first.

I am pretty sure the Winder-M (and W-M4-P and W-M4-2late) will work on the TTL. I have a TTL and have no problems using my Winder-M4-P. Can ypu elaborate further on your sources please?

I check the latest pdfs on Leica's website and the Motor-M works on all Ms from M4-2 on up. No mention of the Winder-Ms not working and they are functionally the same design. As I said before the Winder-M works fine on my TTL.

Dear Phil,

My rule of thumb (if you'll pardon the expression), is that you should use the new Leica motor with new or relatively unused Leica bodies. There can be problems in the motor shooting and / or advancing the film properly. I tried a store demonstation motor with my old M-6 and it didn't fire. Tried my out of the box motor (without film) on same M-6 and it did fire. But still I thought the combo too risky to use. The motor on my new out the box M-6 TTL works beautifully.

You say in a post script posting, you'd like a motor without the grip. I understand that desire, as much as I like the grip. (It is impossible to take a goggle-eyes 135/2.8 on and off with that grip. You may also miss the Leica "feel".) Unfortunately, this leaves only the old Leica motors as options. There are actually two kinds. The old ones cannot be used on M-6's (and, I think, M-4P's). The newer ones are for the M-4P and M-6 and might work on the TTL. But even if they do, I strongly recommend against using them. When Leica stopped making that old motor there were very few tears shed by Leica users. It was noisy and apparently prone to misfunction. I think the newer one is better. It is quiet and nicely balanced. I am being very careful with it, however, and using it on only one body.

The Abrahamsson Rapidwinder certainly will work on an M-6 TTL. This device is something I have raved about in previous threads and don't raving about again. Most importantly, it is far more forgiving than the motor. Your camera does not have to be adjusted to absolute perfection for it to function properly. It is quieter than the motor, it does not need batteries, it will be serviced forever by Tom Abrahamsson (a very good guy) and you don't have to put a grip on it if you don't want to.

One important thing I should mention is that the Rapidwinder works best with lenses that have focusing tabs. This generally means lenses up to and including 50mm. You might feel the tendency of "running out of hands" without a focusing tab, though shooting 75mm, 90mm and 135mm with the Rapidwinder is not a huge burden once you get a certain finger coordination going--I've done it (and will do it again).

Another thing about the motor. It pumps the shutter release button up and down when you fire. A lot of photographers hate this. I personally don't mind--it's like a reasuring nudge. But try the motor and see how you feel. Also try the Rapidwinder. Both are, in my view, heaven sent if you stick an auxiliary finder into the hotshot. The rewinder lever is a little hard to get at in the closed position with an auxiliary finder.
