Passport Warranty about to expire

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

The recent thread regarding fire and theft coverage has remined my that my Passport coverage will expire at the end of March (Big deal, I know).

My question is: has anyone sent their camera in for a CLA just because the warranty is about to expire? Just curious.

Thanks all.

Jeff, Not sure if Leica will cover an eleventh hour CLA, but it's worth calling to find out. (If you're in the USA, try 201 767 7500.) Bear in mind, you can extend the Passport coverage for two years for and extra $75 per item. Not sure if it's worth it.

The two year extended warranty is not a passport warranty but just a continuation of regular warranty. If you drop it, you pay for the repairs.

The Passport coverage includes repair/replacement of damage & defects, not CLA's. I have a 35/2 Summicron w/a small defect (foreign body in rear element)--even though the defect doesn't affect the optical performance (as far as I can tell), I plan to send the lens in before the warranty expires . . . 2 1/2 years from now!

Jeff: The additional 2 years has been worth it in my opinion. My understanding is that the passport plan is extended completely and that everything applies. It has been very useful to me and a wise investment. Call Brenda and I am sure they will do the CLA.

A recent message from the Leica-Users archives on the extended warranty:

i dunno, i spoke to brenda olesin personally about a year ago and she said, 'send it in just before your passport warranty is up for a free CLA'. unless something has changed, CLAs should be covered.
