Girl Scout Cookies

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MATH Plus One : One Thread

Starting this because Stef mentioned Trefoils in the coffee thread.

Do you buy them? Did you sell them? Do you know someone who does? Can you send that someone by my office?

Samoas make me feel sorry for people who don't like coconut. But it took me a long time to warm up to the chocolate-and-mint combination, so I'm sure all the Thin Mints lovers feel sorry for me.

Discuss the cookies here.

Answers

Sold 'em. Buy 'em. Eat 'em. Love 'em.

Tagalongs remain my favorite after more than 20 years, followed closely by Do-si-dos and Thin Mints.

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

See, I always thought they were Tagalogs, as in the language spoken in the Philippines. 'Cause I'm a freak.

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

Mad Mad is selling them right now. Anybody need anything?

I remain, after 20 years of eating/selling/buying Girl Scout Cookies, firmly in the Tagalong camp. Even though they're dumb and changed the name.

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

Tagalongs are hands-down my favorites. I ordered a box of those, a box of thin mints, and a box of do-si-dos from my boss's daughter - and because my boss wants his daughter to be her troop winner, he's doing a corporate matching program, so I'll get TWO boxes of each cookie. Nice.

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

I used to go door-to-door with my little red wagon, back when they still did chocolate-chip. And you know those little girls with the big eyes outside the supermarket? Yeah, that was me. Still a sucker for those. Plus my sister sells 'em. I'm surrounded by temptation. And go broke every February.

I still harbor Thin Mint love, but right now? It's all about the Trefoils.

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

I also thought they were Tagalogs. With Samoas, that made a Pacific Rim theme, or something.

Anyway, I do love the Thin Mints, but Samoas will always be my true love.

Am I the only chick here that was never a Girl Scout?

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

No Samoa love? Oh, people.

AB, I might have to take you up on that offer, as I have not seen even a shadow of a Girl Scout in my kid-friendly neighborhood. Problem is, I know two adorable Girl Scouts in the Dallas area, and would probably have to order the same amount from both of them. Oh, the dilemma.

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

Please note that Julie posted as I was writing. Yay for Samoas!

I was the worst Girl Scout cookie seller in cookie selling history. Management textbooks have been written about my cookie selling ineptitude.

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

I kicked ass in the cookie selling department. I was often number one or two in my troop. Usually two because there was always one little girl whose parents did all the selling for them.

Samoas are my love. I could live on Samoas. And yet I still think I"m spelling them wrong.

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

Trefoils, all the way. The only problem with those are you have to eat a lot of them...not nearly as rich as all you Tagalong (or however you spell it) people.

Any thoughts on the reduced-fat cookies? Are the girl scouts selling out, or just getting more timely and realistic? [Or have they just seen my cookie-eating ass?]

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

All this talk about Samoas makes me want to bake a coconut cake... in my new KITCHENAID!! HAHAHAAH!

But seriously, people - last year I ate a whole BOX of Tagalongs in like, 2 hours. Oh yes, I did. It was like one of those sad Ricki Lake moments where you suddenly wake up, covered in chocolate and say "What have I done?! Where am I?! Who am I?!"

I was never a Girl Scout (private school and all) but I sure do love me some cookies! I've already been suckered for three boxes at the grocery store. The Thin Mints are the hands-down all-time greatest, and went promptly into my freezer for summer-time consumption. The willpower that this requires is phenomenal, but the payoff is so worth it.

Now, the new Friendship Circles, which are like a reverse Oreo, are quite good, and they each have the word "friend" in different languages where the "Oreo" would be. Tasty in coffee. If I had the money or the time, I thought it would be cute to buy a bunch of boxes and send them out to my girl pals. Alas, I have neither. I brought a box over to Megan (the Beav), and two days later (empty box in hand), she said, "Thanks - a real friend wouldn't have brought me cookies knowing I would eat them all. Please don't bring me any more Girl Scout cookies, friend."

Oh, not only did we buy them and sell them and eat them, I was the Cookie Chairman of Troop 92, Cahaba Council. Our garage was filled to capacity with hundreds of cartons of cookies and then we had to break them into individual orders. We then had each Mom come by and pick up her daughters order to be distributed. We also collected and accounted for all the money. It was quite an event. The biggest problem was keeping Bill Lowe from eating them on the sly. Each year, I had to cough up extra money because there were always several boxes unaccounted for. My absolute favorite is the Thin Mint. I usually buy sevreal boxes of those and keep them in the freezer. They make a delicious on the spot desert when served with vanilla ice cream topped with either chocolate syrup or creme de menthe.

-- Anonymous, January 28, 2002

Well...Mad Mad hasn't yet received your order, Mrs. Lowe.

She'll be waiting patiently.

It's Girl Scout Cookie Time?! Rock.

I was a Girl Scout for many years. I sold a lot of cookies. I still eat them and love them. The thing that always bothered me was that we got such lame "prizes" for selling. Sell 250 boxes and get a one inch pewter zebra! Lame, lame, lame.

One year, I tuned into the fact that the BOY Scouts sold stuff (blocks of the best cheese ever, in Wisconsin, actually) and got KICKASS prizes, like camping gear and electronic stuff. I staunchly refused to bust my ass that year selling cookies. Hmm..maybe that's where my feminist roots came from..the injustice of it all!

Anyway, I've yet to purchase any this season because I did not know! Until two seconds ago! If I can't hunt any local scouts down, I may buy from MadMad and have AB ship them with love. When is she done selling, AB?

ooooh gaaaah I haven't had Girl Scout cookies in yeaaars thanks to this neighbourhood not having enough kids as far as I can see. feh.

I am having a lapse in memory on the names of the cookies, but is the shortbread one the trefoils or what? I liked those. and the peanut butter and chocolate? which was that? cause I could eat a whole box of those in one sitting if I tried. damn those were gooood.

we used to buy thin mints, too but I'm not much of a chocolate/mint person. eh.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

Amber, those peanut butter and chocolate ones are the Peanut Butter Patties. If Reese's made a cookie, this would be it. Pure evil.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

Those would be the Tagalongs. And they are the devil's cookies, I tell you. So very delicious.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

Yes, they're called Tagalongs and they finish a close second to Samoas.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

I'm so confused. Didn't they change the names of the Tagalongs, and do away with the Samoas altogether?

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

PG, you shut yo mouf. They did NOT do away with the Samoas. They did change the name, but I can't remember if Samoa is the olde skool name and I just keep calling them that or if that's their new name.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

They changed the names of a bunch of them, y'all. Samoas = Caramel Delights; Tagalongs = Peanut Butter Patties; Trefoils = Shortbread; Do Si Dos = Peanut Butter Cremes (I think).

I don't think the new names are nearly as cool as the old ones, though.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

H, Miss Daughter of a Troop Leader, Samoa is indeed the old skule name. I think that Tagalong is the old skule name for the Best Cookie Evah. I can't wait to get my boxed filled with peanut-buttery goodness. Thank god I live in Georgia, y'all, because I think that peanut butter is my favorite food ever.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

Tagalongs = Peanut Butter Patties

See, in my lust for them, I had not noticed the name change.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

They changed the names of a bunch of them, y'all. Samoas = Caramel Delights; Tagalongs = Peanut Butter Patties; Trefoils = Shortbread; Do Si Dos = Peanut Butter Cremes (I think).

That. Is. So. Wrong. Words. Cannot. Express. It.

But I went and did some research on the Girl Scouts official website and found a possible reason for the discrepancy:

Licensed bakers can offer up to eight varieties of Girl Scout cookies®; only three types are mandatory: Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Sandwich/Do-si-dos™ and Shortbread/Trefoils. The national Girl Scout organization reviews and approves all varieties proposed by the bakers. Any of the five optional cookies can be changed every year. Each bakery names its own cookies, so Girl Scout cookies that are quite similar may have different names. Suggestions for new cookies are welcome, but the national Girl Scout organization can make no promise to use them. [bold added]

So Little Brownie Bakers uses the Samoa/Tagalong/Do-si-do names, and ABC Bakers do not.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

And apparently, that was a huge controversy a few years back - ABC came in with a lower bid, and Little Brownie was no longer the cookie supplier! Horrors! And the ABC cookies sucked, and they changed the names, and finally, the GSA went back to using Little Brownie, too.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

It scares me that the Tagalongs are not mandatory, because they are the living end.

The living end, I say. Will they go away someday?!?!

The Samoas and Thin Mints are pretty good too.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

See, I was never a Samoa fan. That is just too much stuff happening for one cookie. The oats, the chocolate, the coconut, the hole in the middle - it's sensory overload for a cookie.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

Oh, T. I'm a little sad that you do not recognize the genius that is the Samoa. It's nature's ultimate food. (Well, that and tiramisu.)

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

But Mike, there's so much going on there - I didn't even mention the caramel part! What can I say? It's not that I don't like the Samoa - it's just that I'm a simple gal, and I like my cookies with three things: cookie, peanut butter, chocolate.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

T, I am so with you! thank you for perfectly encapsulating the odd malaise I've always felt toward the Samoa/Caramel Delite. You have a way with words... have you ever thought about writing? You could start an online journal.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

I just ordered some and they ARE still called Samoas. And Tagalongs.

Old school forever!

I ordered six boxes. Is that excessive?

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

must be that back and forth baker action, because, I swear -- the Peanut Butter Patties replaced the Tagalongs last year.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

Six boxes is enough... Tagalongs. For ONE person, in our family. Compared to us, H, you showed admirable restraint. My husband's best friend's daughter is a Girl Scout and he buys dozens of boxes. He tries to pretend like he's doing a friend a favor but our secret, unspoken shame is that we are pigs. Oink oink.

Word on the "rewards" they used to give for selling a lot of cookies. They were totally jank, like a keychain or something. The magazine sales rewards at least were small stuffed animals.

The poor Boy Scouts in our area have to sell POPCORN of all things. Popcorn! They might as well make them go door to door selling cat turds!

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

God, I can't believe anyone actually won the awards. I lived in this neighborhood with like...20 people in 2 miles. Needless to say, I sold about ten boxes. The good thing was that I lived next door to a fish store (the lot is pretty big, so it's not that gross) staffed by all twenty-something guys. They used to buy seven or eight boxes.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

I ordered six boxes. Is that excessive?

I hope not. Since the MOC and I ordered 8.

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

just seeing the pictures of the cookies on that website makes me droool.

oh man, I hope some girl scouts start showing up around here so I can order some. *crosses fingers*

-- Anonymous, January 29, 2002

Oh, damn. My cookies just came in. Stop me before I eat everything in the whole world.

The fat and calorie content of a Tagalong is staggering.

-- Anonymous, March 04, 2002

The Girl Scouts were out at Albertson's this weekend. Well, actually they were Brownies.

They have a new reduced fat cookie, I can't remember the name of course, but it's got almonds in it and a zing of citrus covered in powdered sugar. They're pretty tasty for a reduced fat cookie.

I must be developing willpower as I haven't eaten a Samoa yet. I even forgot I had one in my desk drawing. It must be mute.

-- Anonymous, March 04, 2002

They were selling them at Vons and I resisted. I'm so proud of myself, yet simultaneously kicking myself. A few Thin Mints never hurt a girl

-- Anonymous, March 04, 2002

I swear, there is some sort of addictive agent in the Tagalongs. I might have to just throw them away. Peanut Butter and Chocolate don't always have this affect on me... otherwise, wouldn't I eat Reese's all day long? What is it about the Tagalongs? Help meeeee!

-- Anonymous, March 04, 2002

Desk DRAWER. Not drawing. Sheesh. I must have work related issues on the brain.

-- Anonymous, March 04, 2002

C told me last night that he ate half a box of Tagalongs in ten minutes, so he had to make himself give the rest of the box to his secretary so he wouldn't eat any more. I'm hoping that my Tagalongs are delivered soon. Very soon.

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2002

The most dangerous combination is Tagalongs paired with Thin Mints. You scarf down half a box of Tagalongs and then when you feel guilty for consuming 42 bazillion grams of fat in 3 minutes, you switch to the Thin Mints which, compared to the Tagalongs, seem pretty healthy.

And then you eat a half box of the Thin Mints, which turns out just as bad since, unlike the Tagalongs which only have about 20 cookies to the box, there are 400 Thin Mints per box.

You just can't win against the Girl Scouts.

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2002

Fucking Mexican Wedding cookies this year. They were the bloated death of me.

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2002

Ladies AND gentlemen....

We have cookies!!!

-- Anonymous, March 07, 2002

Y'all - I got Edy's Tagalong Ice Cream. They also make Thin Mint and Samoa. Someone else has tried this, right?

-- Anonymous, March 12, 2002

The Smoker loves Samoa ice cream more than he loves me. And I don't blame him one bit.

-- Anonymous, March 12, 2002

The Easter Bunny came early and brought me Thin Mints. Damn that bunny.
