does anyone have any instructions for making a teepee that would suit 2 adults and 3 children for camping. Have been reading all the info on yurts but they seem to require a lot of frame work. None available her in Ireland hence the DIY idea. Would there be a big problem with insects in a tee

Aileen, Some of my relatives lived in a tipi back in the 80's and didn't have an unusual amount of trouble with insects. The tipi was huge, very roomy and nice. Some of my friends have one now and only use it for camping (buckskinning get togethers). They have no insect problems either. Both of these tipis were purchased. You could cut your own poles and order the ready made canvas cover. Best of luck!

Aileen, Maybe not in Ireland but in the UK. http://www.wildharmony.com/ There are kits and they sell holidays too.

We use sap-peeled poles vs commercially made fiberglass, which are heavy, cumbersome and cost a fortune to ship anywhere, esp 27-ft. The Grandkids live in them every summer.

Bugs? No problem. Put down a floor and a mesh screen in the opening. Have a can of "Off" helps.

Go to the library and check out Rustic Retreats A Build It Yourself Guide by David & Jeanie Stiles. It's a gem. The file number is 690.872 Shows things like how to build Wigwams, Tipis, Huts, Tree House, Sauna, Tiny Log Cabin, Campfire Circle, Lean-To's, Arbors, Yurt and other stuff. All useing simple materials and methods anyone can do. Illustrations are great. Gives materials lists and talks about tools and methods.

The Indian Tipi by Reginald and Gladys Laubin is considered the bible on the subject. originally published in 1957.

very detailed info geared toward home construction and use of the tipi. we used it with success to build ours. as for insects-guess that depends on where it's placed and what kind of crawlies you have.

Thanks for the info on Indian Country. I've been planning for some time to buy a teepee canvas. I'd rather buy it from Indians - it's a better way to help support them than by losing money at the casinos!
