MC Meter- Longevity???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I have an MC meter that is very accurate, and has no problems. How do I keep it that way for as long as possible? Do I give it regular excerise, and store it on a shelf that gets some light, or in a dark drawer? I know that one day it will die, and if it does, can it be repaired?

FWIW i have 2 such meters. One looks old the other looks "passed on". i use them regularly,no special attention. They are indeed very accurate. The best part is that once i'd adjusted the zero, they've been great.Far more reliable than the CDS meter that came with my M3. i kinda prefer the top meter to M6.Very fiddly...Anyway the M6 is becoming my main shooting camera...

The selenium cells can be replaced & the meter fixed. I don't know any places in the UK, but here in the States, Quality Light-Metric in Hollywood California (323-467-2265) does excellent work.

Selenium meters should be kept in the dark. Light activates the meter.

Thanks for the responses. The reason I asked about keeping it in the light, or dark, is that five years ago I put a Western IV away in a drawer, and it recently came out again having lost the will to live. It was probably a co-incidence, and was going to die anyway. Thanks for the address, I will make a note of it.
