No More Arsenic Treated Lumber!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

I read an article about a week ago that this might happen. It did. There will be an industry-wide pullout of Copper Chromium Arsenate as a lumber preservative. Here is a link to the story:

CCA phase out

They, unfortunately, didn't mention what they were going to use in its place.

Yeah!(?)

Didn't they used to use turpentine?

Hopefully, nothing. There are several rot-resistant natural woods for things like decks and outdoor furniture, and none of them will stunt your children. Then there's planning. If you PLAN ahead and realize that wood in ground contact has a limited lifespan, you can still have raised beds, etc., that are replaced on a rotating basis. I find oak sawmill boards here in zone 6 (TN) will last me about 4-5 years (as raised- bed borders) before they are in their turn made into compost. These are not top-of-the-line building lumber, but slabs and short boards, etc.
