Looking for "we moved to the country" storiesgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
I am trying to build a resource for people who have yet to make the move to the country and am looking for some people who might be willing to share their "we moved from the city/suburbs to the country" story. Looking for real stories, good, bad, or otherwise. If you, or somebody you might know, might be interested in hearing more about my project, please send me an e-mail.Thanks!

This sounds like a wonderful, but massive project. People who choose a "country" lifestyle have so many ways of approaching what they do, and come from so many areas, I can't imagine distilling the info. Ten years ago, we bought a farm at auction after walking through the property once. The family of dirtballs who had been renting it for 9 years trashed it just enough so that no other buyers really wanted it. It was rough, and still is by any suburban standard, but the land is lovely. We share our attic space with a big bat colony, but the house is a charming 100-year-old farmhouse. The closest Mc Donalds is 10 miles away, but the best lamb chops are out in the barn. The closest athletic club is 12 miles away, but you should see the washboard stomach my hubby has from pitching haybales! Moving from the burbs has been a trade-off in so many aspects of our lives, and I believe so deeply that we have what is right for us. I hope your project goes well! Lisa V

Mike, I agree with Lisa. This sounds overwhelming. i couldn't get my husband to plan a move, and instead had to trick him into moving on a "good feeling" into a dump that was a great deal with one of the most gorgeous views around. We lovel our hovel! We live a good 15 miles from the nearest fast food. The closest town is 8 miles, but it is so curvy that it takes as long as going to the "big"city of 4500 that is 12 miles away. still, way to "urban" in many ways for me. We love it up here though.

Thanks for the responses. While I am not necessarily trying to distill all the information, I am trying to create an area where people can discuss certain topics and learn from others who have already made the move.I am trying to help people, who have yet to make the move to the country, but are considering it. It seems that most of the info out there online, at least, is geared towards people who already live in the country.
