Filter on 24mm M lensgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread |
I know the general feeling of filters over a fine lens and that they may cause more problems than good on ASPH lens but sometimes I just want one for when lenses can be exposed to nasties. Most of the time I use none.So I got a B&W UV filter for general protection on my 24mm 2.8 M lens. Now the hood barely fits and it doesn't click back on well at all. It won't go on that last little bit. The B&W box does say it is coated, I think they all are but I know some are multi-caoted and ussually say so.
A B&W filter fits on my 35mm ASPH 'lux no problem though the hood attachement is a little different.
I must have some brand X 55mm filters kicking around to try.
Any other 24mm owners with filters have a problem with one brand over another?
Thanks

Neil, B+W makes two levels of filters, coated and multi-coated. Also, I was told by the NW Leica rep that B+W makes Leica's filters...I'm guessing that they are the standard coating, not multi-coated. B+W also makes lens hoods that you might try.

The two different B+W coatings I'm aware of are both multi-coating. The upper one is the MR coating, for Multi Resistant, it is a heavier duty coating. To my knowledge, all B+W filters are multi-coated. Correct me if I'm wrong, so I'll have learned something.Concerning the hood problem, it might be helped with the slim version of the filter. On my Elmarit 21, though, even with the slim filter, the hood does not click.

I also have the 24mm 2.8 and the BW UV filter, which fits without any trouble. Have you checked your lens shade?

I use B+W filters on my 24, and they have always fit without trouble. After reading your post, I decided to study the filter/hood junction. I have to say that while my hood fits just fine, there is precious little room left between the edge of the filter and the inner rail of the hood; perhaps less than 0.1 mm. I expect it is possible that you got a short-tolerance hood and a long-tolerance filter and hence the two are interfering with each other. Have you tried a different filter?Good luck,

I have both the 21ASPH and v.1 Tri-Elmar which use the identical front mount as the 24ASPH. As Jack said, the 55 B+W is a close fit, but there is no interference. B+W multi-coated filters are designated "MRC Multi-Resistant-Coating". IMO they are head and shoulders above the rest. You are hard put to tell there's glass in the rim, the antireflective coatings are that good.

Unscrew the filter a half turn and the hood will go on.

If I may be a John-come-lately, Rob is right. It is the same with B+W filters on the 21/2.8 as well.

Well I tried unscrewing the filter a bit, no good. It either does not fit or the filter clips clip between the filter and teh lens and then the hood rotates. This is weirdI'll have to go back and try another filter, maybe a multicoated one if they have it.
Thanks

I had the same problem so I bought the leica filter. I works fine. Hated paying double the money though! Kajabbi
