I saw your question here about a week ago and noticed that no one has answered it. May I ask what evidence you have of such a ship ever leaving San Francisco in 1798 in the first place because there weren't that many foreign ships that landed in San Francisco during that period. I'm pretty sure that there was some kind of problem between Spain and England during this time and so there was a lot of coastal vigilance going on for English ships. It most likely would have had to have been an American ship but there is no such ship ever listed in the records of the Spanish that I ever saw. I know there was some contraband trading going on and maybe there might have been some trades like that in the dark night. But any ships in the day time would have been easily spotted and as such would have been ordered to go to Monterey for permission to trade. Such ships would have been logged and this one wasn't. The only other clue I can give you is that I know there was an Otter company called the Pacific Fur Company and they would come down and illegally catch otter but not directly in San Francisco. Since their name was the Pacific Fur Company, I could see where someone might want that name to reflect off their boats so an owner might name a boat the Pacific Fur or the Pacific or the Great Pacific in honor of the company.
