how to run electrical in concrete block home

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Just curious, those of you with block homes with the interior consisting of exposed concrete block- How is your electrical wiring installed? Do you use surface mounted conduit and boxes? How about water supply lines? Surface mounted also?

Thanks, Brad

Ceilings and interior walls only, plus two outlets on the floor, here. Its ok, but can be a pain in the bedrooms, trying to get an alarm clock closr to the nightstand.

Run them through second floor joists. Down walls. If they bothered me, they don't, I would just hide them in false columns and false beams. Built-in floor to ceiling shelves with a 3" false back is another option.

I agree with the wiremold method. Being a former electrician it is a hard job to run electic wire down inside existing blocks. Also some exterior blocks are filled with a filler. If you drill a hole or cut out for a recessed box you may have this filler dust drain out for several minutes making a big mess.

Their are some very attractive wiremolds that come in different colors and sizes that you can mount on the surface of the blocks. Wiremold can even be run on the ceiling if necessary.

We use conduit and surface mounted electrical boxes. When we reach the point of hanging sheetrock, we will cover over the surface mounts. Our plumbing is run on existing walls, but is being moved to run underneath the wood flooring when it it put down. We painted the conduit to match the walls, you really don't notice it. But I want sheetrock walls so I can wall paper, so the conduit will be hidden behind that. Hubby knows how to do all that, I just fetch and tote.
