For those of us for whom the answer matters a great deal, can you confirm for me that the Boiceville Inn is not a smoke-free zone? I think I've only been in there once and that was years ago. I can not and will not go into a room where people are allowed to smoke freely.

Hi Everybody, Please check out 2 postings at the end of last week, one from me and one from Neil. Neil: I've known Gloria Bailey for a long time from soccer. She asked me, also, at the show last night about joining. I'm ok with it. What a fabulous show!! This is Onteora at it's very best......

I spoke to the printer we used last year and they are still interested in giving us a very good price for our current printing needs. They live in the district also and are sympathetic to SOS aims.-- Bruce Parker (BruceShea@aol.com), March 18, 2002

We have received two checks totalling $400 in addition to the funds collected at last weeks meeting. That means we have nearly $800. A great start!! Let's keep spreading the word.Tobe-Do you have the prices from the newspapers? I would like to be able to put forth a budget and schedule for printing.
Bruce-I do not have the addresses, emails and phone numbers of the local papers handy. Please pick one up or if someone has this info please post it for everyone. That would be really helpful. Good idea and thanks.
You guys are doing great! Laurel H. is getting the press release ready and fine tuning it. We are on a roll.

I'll call newspapers for pricing and let the group know. Tobe

I wonder who is talking about the Boiceville Inn event and what is needed there? Is there a format to raise money other than entry fee or outright begging? Is there still a belief at large that this group wants to be working on handout type responses to the big election issues? Thanks.

Here are some prices for newspapers: To do an insert in the Kingston Freeman: 8 1/2" sheet (printed both sides) circulation to cover Onteora (includes some extra areas...but we that's what the routes cover) 11,000 pieces needed to be inserted. We can print them ourselves and deliver them to the Freeman no later than one week before the date of insertion. Cost about $550. Payment must be included. If we want them to print the sheets (2 sided) and insert them, we need to get copy and layout (quark express 3.32 [Mac only]) or camera ready art and text, to them three weeks before insertion... Cost including printing: $1023. Payment must be included.
Question is can we get printing done cheaper that they offer it? That means cheaper than $478 for 11,000 double sided...
Woodstock Times costs: 1/4 page $138 1/2 page $276 Full page $534.75
Will try to get Ulter Townsman rates tomorrow.

I've been distracted with school, kids and weather...friday, March 22nd, my oldest graduates from college. We're off to Philadelphia for weekend...sorry, won't be at SOS meeting. I'm interested in helping with voter registration and phone calling if that comes up. I also have a bunch of signatures for Kathy...when's deadline? Give me blanks for other candidates and I'm happy to gather. did anyone pin down OTA buttons "Focus on Education"? I spoke to Web a couple weeks ago and he was going to get me a bunch, but havn't heard. Can Doan have objection to these worn at school? staff is wearing them at Phoenicia. Happy snow everyone!! Top of Fox Hollow got a foot!

I was asked to post this for those who are interested. Tobe Dear Friends, The News-Gazette (Champaign-Urbana's daily newspaper) is holding an online poll about "Chief Illiniwek." Please take a moment to vote against the "Chief." The poll can be accessed from the main page of the News-Gazette website at www.news-gazette.com. The choices are: "Find a new mascot/symbol," "Keep him as he is now," and "Continue to try to find a compromise." We do not know how long the poll will be online, so please vote NOW! And please forward this message to your friends, family, co-workers, etc. and urge them to vote against the "Chief." We know that issues of racism and social justice cannot and should not be decided by popular opinion alone, but it never hurts for the anti-"Chief" movement to make a good showing, so please vote! Thanks, The PRC.

So...I attended a workshop meeting at Ulster BOCES last night put on by the Ulster County School Board Association. It was very informative, well presented, and I'm glad I went. Two interesting things....the presenters basically confirmed Joe Doans behavior as illegal, and at the very least unethical. Our district is a virtual laughing stock to the other districts, who have none of these problems, or at least not currently.
The other is that I met another cnadidate there. Her name is Naomi Long, from Oliverea. She is 24, single, no kids, Onteora graduate, well spoken, background working in Albany for the SUNY system, has served on some boards in the SUNY or Dept of Education system...works on hot rod cars...drives a 57 Chevy, and cant stand the antics of the current Board majority. We introduced ourselves, and wished each other luck. Other than that I didnt say much about what my plans were, and she seemed a bit out of the loop in that regard. She did mention that years ago she had had dealings with the Board, mentioned a personality conflict with Sandy Truhe, and also said sahe probably didnt have a chance of winning. She's extremely outgoing, and opinionated.....we'll just have to see what happens.
I also spoke to Wendy about signatures. I have a lot that are not full names (like Jim Sofranko!! Tom Rosato !! Pat Stroh!! ) to name a few. Wendy said not to worry, those would be OK....but warned me about Curry Rinzler (apparently that cant be matched to his registered name). The point is...she suggested just dropping off my list and she'll let me know if I need more or not. She said there would be no announcement publically until the day after the deadline either way...so what do I have to lose.
Anyway...thats my update.

Neil: Glad you went to the meeting last night. How many people ewre there? Anyone here know the candidate you mentioned (Naomi Long) and can she be dissuaded from running this year???????Since she sees rthe majiority for what they are, hopefully she'll be helpful in NOT splitting the vote.
Glad to hear about Wendy's advice on signatures. Be advised people CAN sign more than one person's petitions...They can sign all the candidates' petitions if they choose...as long as they don't sign the same one's twice.

PS were there some specific comments about the "laughingstock" that Onteora seesms to be? Or do people just roll their eyes when you mentioned what district you were from?

I learned this last year, and now use my legal name when signing petitions and other legal stuff.
-- Anonymous, March 22, 2002
Meg reminds me that the science fair is tomorrow at the High School gym...a good place for candidates to be seen and to check out what's happening - 9AM-12 noon..mayby it makes sense for some (all) candidates to leave our meeting to get there in shifts, or for a while, etc. Tobe

It is my opinion that all respectable people should be warned about Curry Rinzler who's legal name, I believe, is Zorro.I spoke to Wendy about Naomi Long today (Friday) and she hadn't heard of her at all. The only petitions that went out, and weren't from the incumbants, are Neil, Kathy, myself, Joe Doan (an extra) and Dan Schneider who recently was observed so disruptive and screaming out at the Woodstock Town Board meeting that the police were called in to calm matters down. He is by trade a mediator...
So my conclusion is that Naomi knew about the BOCES meeting from either Dan Schnieder or Joe Doan. Either one of them would have gotten the letter from OCSD and could have forwarded it to her. Another long-shot is that Rose isn't running and gave her petition to Naomi.
Did she actually have a petition?? Perhaps she read about the meeting in the newspapers and simply attended without a petition? We should contact her and see where she's at. SOS MEETING TOMORROW - 10AM - SHOKAN - KATHY AND RICK HOCHMAN'S

Nice meeting today, folks. Big news has come in this afternoon saying that the third opponent will be Bob Wilkins. He is a former U.C. Legislator, a former contract bus owner, and an experienced politician. Not to be taken lightly. He is reportedly well liked and will soften Doan's hard edge in the community. More than ever we'll need all the help we can get from our friends in politcal circles to get out OUR vote. Neil, any info about him we can gather from the dems?

FWIW-Bob Wilkens owns the building in Shokan where the Cub Cadet and Mercedes repair shops are located. He operates the used car lot in that complex. He has been an Ulster county legislator for a long time but not currently. He is very conservative and I recall him speaking at public-be-heard during BOE meetings lamenting on the need for prayer during the school day. I'm sure he will easily buy into the Doan line of reasoning. We will have to address the platform and if he agrees with the direction the current board has been taking. It would be curious to see what his record was in the UC legislature.
