This is London.com March 20, 2002Pentagon officials who described the Anaconda operation as a huge success are now having to concede that nearly three weeks of heavy bombing and ground combat did not prevent significant numbers of enemy forces from escaping to fight another day.
The broadcast came only hours after CIA chief George Tenet warned a Senate committee that Osama bin Laden's terror network is still largely intact and poised to inflict injury on the US.
Although more than 1,300 extremists believed to be connected with Bin Laden's network have been apprehended, the threat of future violence remains high, he said.
"Al Qaeda leaders still at large are working to reconstitute the organisation and to resume its terrorist operations," said Mr Tenet.
