Is there a lab who does a better job than most for this black and white film?

I haven't tried the B&W(?) but the color neg. is one fine film.

Depends on where you are and what you want. C-41 machine prints from Portra will look different from traditional black & white prints from the same film. Portra "traditional" B&W enlargments are quite beautiful--silky, clear and very little grain. The machine prints don't do them justice.

Unlike T400CN which is very difficult to machine print on color paper without some kind of color cast, the Portra B&W is designed to machine print on color paper using the same Portra channel as the Portra color films. A good pro lab that processes a lot of Portra for wedding pros, for example, will have the Portra channel optimized and the B&W results will look good. If it's printed on a generic channel or one not optimized for Portra series film, the results will not be good.
