Sorry Iván, the image doesn't do too much for me. My main concern is the excessive foreground with no interesting elements. The texture of the sand isn't enough to hold your attention or balance the reflections on the water. I think if you had the kids in the foreground (ie. more intimate composition) the shot would've been more interesting. This picture reminds me of Sam Abel's earlier work at the NG. Neither epic or intimate... just "quiet". Now if you can do what he did (make your "quiet work" more compelling) then more power to you.

Cheers,

I like the "peace" of the big open space, but I do wish the image were bigger so I could see what the people in the corner are doing. Do you have a bigger scan posted anywhere?

-- Mike Dixon (mike@mikedixonphotography.com), April 14, 2002.

I'm sorry I didn't do my best in my previous posting of this photo so I gave it this image but I'm not sure I was actually able to.

? ? ? ?

Something went wrong here. I assume it had something to do with the message transmission . . .

Here is the supposedly improved version of the photo.

I'll try to learn some more about the scanning art in order to offer better images in the future. Sorry for the mess . . .

You don't have to apologize to anyone Ivan. But as long as you feel that every image you post for critique is BETTER than the last this in itself should fill you with a sense of elation. If your asking for critique you have to be prepared to accept impartiality and prejudice along with objectivity (or more accurately dogmatic subjectivity). Put your ego aside and learn to deal with the critiques objectively... even if they are not. If there's nothing of value in what someone writes then throw it in the mental trashbin. if something strikes an introspective chord while appearing to be objective and truthful then keep it and learn from it with humility.

Now here's something for you to decorate that mental trashbin with:

Ivan, you suck as a photographer!!!!! Why don't you give all that Leica equipment to Mike Dixon or even Alfie Wang!!!! Even his gibberish sermonizing about the merits of this vs that equipment is better than the visual rape you're assaulting my eyes with!!!! DAGGERS IN MY EYES, DAGGERS!!!!

I think I've made my point.

I like this picture.

I would crop the top to eliminate the far shoreline and the little black rock (or whatever it is) just below the shoreline. These dark areas compete for attention with the dark 'cyclists.

Cropping just cleans up the graphics a little bit and eliminates stuff that distracts without adding useful information.

At first I was also made uncomfortable by the fact the building reflections are tilted slightly, but on second and third glance that no longer bothers me.

Un momentito muy lindo y muy tranquilo, Iván. ¡Que hermoso Domingo!

There are 2 things you can do. Flame and say trash or give constructive critisism. I the first case I would say "don't bother putting in you comment".

IMO the large foreground is unesthetic, as is the top of the picture. Getting closer to the subject, or zoom in would have done the trick

Nice shot but the picture would work better as a panoramic. Just cut off the bottom half. On the other hand getting closer would have made it a ho-hum shot.

Thanks everybody for your kind contributions.

Yes, I know that doing something to the photo would improve it as per somebody's taste. But I thoughtfully constructed it the way it is and my averaging of your opinions tells me that I succeeded: the peace of the moment went through...

Main exception: though I always try my best to compose full frame I think Andy is right. The cropping of those little items would improve the image. On the other hand, I feel that if I cropped the vast empty space in the foreground the image would had been useful for life insurance advertisement, perhaps, but wouldn't be my original idea.

BTW: my previous post was actually intended to apologize for an untiddy work because I think we owe our best effort to our pears in this site (IMHO, of course).

And finally, Andy: I hadn't imagined that you managed yourself so well in Spanish. Gracias !

Ivan, on Rai tai's advice......here is your panoramic image

Hope you don't mind me posting your pic on my site.

-- Kristian (leicashot@hotmail.com), April 17, 2002.

Hi, Krisitian:

I take your posting of my pic in your site as a honor (and you certainly cited the author's name, the way every gentleman would).

But I sitck to my original composition: it was the intended one; to change it into Rai's proposed image had have taken just a few steps and I can easily agree that it makes for a "prettier" image but it doesn't say the same. In my photo the people are alone at the ample space for the moment. In the alternative look they are shown alone; no one else seems likely to come across the narrow strip of terrain left in front. For me, the photo is about the peaceful moment, not about the persons staring at the lake at that moment. Subtle difference, I think, and I found no better way to set it forth than showing the ample space usually crossed by many persons at any other time of the day . . .

Does it make any sense for you? The photo should by itself; if it didn't . . .

Thanks for your answer, Kristian. I appreciate it.
