I ordered this Leica R to EOS adapter a while back. It didn't come with any documentation that I'm aware of. So I can't read the friendly manual (RTFM). I wonder if any of you use one of these adapters and can give me some hints on how to use it. I put it on one of my R lenses and attached to my Elan 7 and then what? It doesn't meter so I need to use handheld meter? What mode do I use, manual, shutter priority? Will it stop down properly when I set the aperture? I think it is a great idea to be able to use my R lenses with the EOS bodies and will be even better when I get the D60 or 1D but how do they work??? I really like the quality I get with my R lenses. Thanks for any help you can give on this.

You might want to try www.cameraquest.com. There is some mention of the R to EOS adaptor there - I belive it says you can still you stop down metering and you still get aperture priority. If you find our more in practical usage could you please post your findings? I am considering the D60 myself, and the price in HK looks likely to be less than an M7 body! Having pleasant dreams of a D60 with the R 19 and the 50 1.4 :-)

On the Cameraquest site he says 'The 19/2.8 R, the old 21/4 R, 24 r, and 35/1.4 R can not be used on the EOS'. Bummer, but I would just be happy to use my 35/2.0, 50/2.0, 90/2.8, 135/2.8 and 180. I guess I'll just have to keep trying to figure it out. Cheers. Gil (aka Don Gilberto)

How do you focus with Leica lenses on the EOS? Is it strictly visual focussing or do you get some sort of focus confirmation with the AF function? By the way, you MAY be able to use your 21 F4 with the adapter. The writeup says it can't be used with the older lenses that require mirror lockup. My memory is that the first 21 MM f3.4's required lockup but not the subsequent 21 MM f4's (released from about 1970 onward).

Gil, Although I am not familiar with R to EOS conversion , I have an old Sima 100 soft focus lens with T mount, no electric contacts on the mount of course. The lens is basicaly two plastic tubes, one with a lens element the other with an aperture insert. It produces a very fuzzy image, fuzzier than Dreamagon. I use it on Nikon/Kodak DCS 620 (digital F5) and Canon EOS 3. The lens has no aperture ring, you change the aperture by inserting a diaphragm with a coresponding hole in it. I use it in Aperture priority mode. This way the camera measures the light coming in through the lens and adjusts the shutter speed. The manual mode works too. Both cameras meter and take accurate exposures. Focusing confirmation does not work on either camera. I would expect your Elan should meter as well but you will not have the readout for the current aperture in the viewfinder. You will have to stop down manually prior to taking the picture, but probably open up for focusing. Good luck, Igor

Gil, the Elan 7 and 7E (and their non-US-named counterparts)are the two EOS bodies which will *not* meter correctly with other than EF lenses. All other EOS bodies will meter in stop-down mode in either Av or M modes. You can not use Tv or P modes, and the lens will *not* stop down by itself. If you want to shoot at anything other than wide open, you must turn the lens' aperture ring to that aperture before you shoot.

In addition to the non compatible lenses listed in the 'booklet' that accompanies the adapter the elmarit-r 28 2.8 also does not work. At infinity the eos mirror his the mount of the rear element. The mirror will drop down into position if focus is moved slightly closer than infinity
