M6TTL price drop - maybe not...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Friends, since we had a long thread on the depressed prices on M6TTLs the other day, I cannot help to this link.

Amazing that someone would pay $1,500 for a LNIB on eBay when one could have bought it NIB on e.g. Rich Pinto's Leica day w/ 3 yrs warranty for $1,550.

Goes to show that there is no such thing as perfect market information. I'm happy that people still are paying that kind of money though.

cheers,

Is it true that I can now get the M6 TTL at $1,500 with 3-Yr USA Passport Warranty? I browsed Photovillage website and did not find this deal.

I got my new M6TTL 0.58 from Rich Pinto this week. The Leica Day 10% thingo was last Wednesday. Combined with the $200 rebate the price went from $1,950 to $1,555. Free shipping. (The $200 is a mail in rebate to New Jersey Leica and is being offered till August 31, 2002 on al M6TTL's (except newly introduced models).) So sorry, you missed the 10% boat.

well, list is $1,950. then there is a $200 mailin rebate. then Rich had a Leica day about a week ago where one would get an extra 10% off, that brings it to about $1,560, no tax if you ship it out of state. If you want new equipment, find a dealer w/ an upcoming Leica day. cheers,

i guess vikram and myself wrote our posts at the same time, only he is quicker... :-)

i assume most people know this already, but there are leica days every month of the year at one dealer or another (usually many per month). most of these events are listed on the leica usa site, but some are not. i should also point out that many dealers will post/back date receipts to allow people to buy things with the discount on days other than the actual leica day. FYI there are also such things as contax days, blad days, and nikon days.

I'm jealous of your Leica fans in US. We in Canada do have the $200 rebate, however, its Cdn! Although the price is same as US (after exchange), the rebate only equates to US$125.

I leared about Rich's Leica Day and send an e-mail to Leica USA, the reply (surprisingly, it's Leica USA's President who replied) said that the rebate only apply to US residents and not friends in the Great White North.

I bought my M6 0.58 new in December for $1600 with the Leica Days sale and the rebate. If I had known, I could have waited and saved $50! All together, I did well for a new Leica with 3 year Passport. (I also bought expensive lenses with the same rebate and 10% discount.)

I eventually want an M7 also but I'll wait till THEY go on rebate and Leica Days, perhaps within a year?

Fred, Don't be surprised that Roger Horn answered you personally. One, he's a nice guy and two, even Leica USA is a small outfit.

BTW-Our guys in Afghanistan apparantly cost you some people today. Our apologies from your neighbors to the South.

Best,

Jerry

Pat: Two points. First, I want to add my sincerest regrets in regards to yesterday's tragic accident in Afghanistan. Gen. Sherman was correct when he said; "War is Hell." Canada's contribution in the fight against the scourge of terrorism will never be forgotten. Secondly, I spoke to Ken Hansen yesterday and he is having a Leica day on May 2. His phone number is 212 3170923. He is the best Leica dealer in New York City. Good luck!!

Hi guys - I'm from the UK and the prices you quote are about half of what a new M6 body costs here (including purchase tax). Are you including the full retail price (including tax) or does this still need to be added onto your quoted prices? If so, what is the percentage of purchase tax in the USA?

Cheers!

Chris, buying any camera equipment in Europe is a total scam (yes, I worked in a camera shop in Stockholm, Sweden during college). You can literally buy a ticket to NY, NY, buy a new leica system (body plus a lens or two), stay the weekend, test shoot your camera, and fly back to Europe and you have still saved money. If you want to save even more buy it from an authorized dealer in e.g. Hong Kong. Ping me offline if you need some advice on dealers

Hi Chris and Pat,

To correct you, an M6 is selling for approx. GBP1,400 in UK (before VAT)and US$1,500 in US (also before Sales Tax but after rebate and discount). UK price is not exactly half of that in US, you have to consider the exchange (i.e. one GBP equals approx. US$1.45). So I'll say UK price is same as US's, at least on a pre-tax and pre-discount basis.

Quite the opposite, it's way much cheaper to buy medium format stuff in UK than US. For instance, Mamiya and Rollei are 30-40% cheaper. I've bought many RZ and 6008 cameras/lenses from Robert White with no problems.

In response to Chris' question on US taxes... Sales tax in the USA varies from state to state. For example, in New York state (where New York City is), I believe sales tax is about 6.5% of the purchase price. But, if you drive about 3 hours north to the state of New Hampshire, there is NO sales tax on anything (well, there is almost nothing in New Hampshire anyway, i don't even know if theu sell leicas up there!) By the way, I'm traveling to europe next month, maybe I should take some new leicas to sell over there... hmmmm Phillip
