Good article in the Freeman today about revolving door school superintendents

-- Anonymous, May 05, 2002

Koffee klatches in Shandaken with the candidates on Sunday went well. Smaller turnout than expected but OK considering the beautiful weather.

An interesting way to get the candidates ideas out in an informal way. The participants, hopefully, will then go out and influence others in the community. What I found most interesting is that it is a good way for us to hear from the people who aren't so involved and listen to their concerns. The candidates did well.

First report of stolen signs today.

Corner of Watson Hollow and 28A. We had three up there along side the opposition's three.

I'm going to wait a day and let people realize they were stolen and then replace them.

Reminder, tonight is Candidate's Night at 7 PM.

Part two of the article on superintendent turnover in the Freeman. I found this statement chilling from retired BOCES superintendent LeDoux chilling: "I made the moves because another opportunity came along that fit into my lifetime career plan."

A number of local districts are in the process of looking for new superintendents. Where does our childrens' education fit into the next superintendent's "lifetime career plan"? Is it just another notch on a resume, or are potential candidates willing to make a commitment to the vitality and stability of our school system?

-- Anonymous, May 06, 2002

I think both sets of signs were stolen from that location in West Shokan, no?

-- Anonymous, May 06, 2002

They still had 2 there so I speculate they moved one to another location and took our 3. I might be wrong, perhaps all were stolen and they replaced their 3 with only 2 but they would have had to have done it before 8:00 this morning.

Jesus Christ, he's a madman!

We'll see how the agenda looks. Is the OCS site down? I couldn't get to it. I would agree with you that Joe won't bring it up or will quietly not participate, but he is CRAZY. This is the man who rationalized appoiting Rosie O. to the BOE. I am not confident in his logic. Ava will have a statement prepared, and the troops shall be gathered. I will say, that if he does bring it up, God Help Him at the students meet the candidates. I am plotting evilly at this exact moment. For the greater good, of course. :)

It's getting late, and I should head in. Thanks for the support.

-- Anonymous, May 06, 2002

Joe will bring WHAT up, oh evilly plotting henchpersonage? Once again, pass on our thanks to the students for showing up and getting involved.

Nice job, everybody. You were positive and focused, and this highlighted your credentials and educational experience. Glad Rose couldn't make it, that allowed time for more questions. That's one thing we should consider for next year's candidates night: make sure all candidates know the ground rules that the League operates under, such as the one which kept Rose's statement from being read.

It was quite amazing to hear Bob "Sled" Wilkins run so fervently on the Indian and the Pledge of Allegiance and bobsledding. And did I _really_ hear him say "None of us went to the cemetary from the abuse we received, but we learned respect"? Loved the way he laid it on the line that the attempt to have Onteora own its own bus service was bad for the bus contractors. And Grumpy Joe, never cracking a smile the entire night, still running against Brian Lane. One guy with his feet firmly planted in 1959, the other enmired in 1999. I wonder which year Rose stands for?

Marino, when you started answering my question about working together with Hal Rowe and what a great guy he is, you should have seen [____] in the audience. I think you made her have a hot flash. She started wiggling like a four year old who has been sitting too long, and fanning herself wildly with her notebook, and making funny faces. It was really a treat, you clearly were hitting a nerve. (I've left the name blank because I still can't tell The Women of CARE apart. They are all kind of short and roly-poly, this was the one with the dark auburn hair, on the other side of the aisle from where I sat. Barbara Clare, perhaps? And Bev the one with short black hair behind her?)

I'm amused to see how the opposition's signs are such a rip-off of Ted's design this year. Imitation is the sincerest form of ... etc. That they are printed on only one side is an interesting symbolic statement that they can only see one side of the issues. (Okay, so I shouldn't quit my day job to become an itinerant semiotician yet)

Look at me, still awake, here to answer your question.

When I approached Joe Doan and Bob Wilkins to remind them to give me their 100 word bios for the student election, Joe Doan proceeded to tell me the following.

1)That the mock election results shouldn't be released until AFTER the actual election:

BECAUSE -Not all students voted (meaning those who were absent, not in school, not interested, etc. Every student who attended homeroom had the chance to vote). -I, apparently, am not completely neutral (who knew?), and am therefore corrupting the election. -SAC is also biased and can not hold an objective election. -Therefore, whatever vote the student body makes should not be trusted and should not shape voters' minds on election day.

There was more, but that was the brunt of it.

Coincidentally, I talked to Erik right after I got home. This is what he suggested:

"Mr. Doan, you have accused the an organization elected by and for the students of being corrupt...and I am intensely offended by such an accusation...yet SAC will comply with your request that the student results be held until after the election...this is not an admission that your accusations are valid but rather to prove that it is not just a select group of students with a bias against you...but the entire high school community...and it is my belief that the voters of this district will see you in the same negative light that you believe the students do." (or something like that)

Heh. I rather like it, but am not sure if that's the direction I need to go. Still, it made me laugh.

Jim: Please email me. I don't have your correct email address. Thanks.

What are you referring to exactly, Rachel. I'm curious, did something specific happen or said? Or just all of it. Personally, I want the mock election results before May 21st. It's a political moment the students obviously have power. Keep the !%?@ Doan guessing and worrying!

Our candidates must have looked good in comparison to opposition! I can't believe the Indian was brought up.

Off to Women's Network Dinner tonight...Melissa

Rachel,

I would be extremely dissapointed if SAC were to cave in to the demands of Joe Doan and not release the results of their election (unless you agree with him that they are unfair). I think that some people put a lot of weight on the voice of the students and I think it is important. I hope that SAC will reconsider.

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2002

Maybe we should hold off having the actual district-wide elections since not everyone registered to vote does so?

It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

Have the student election as scheduled, and announce the results as scheduled. Tell him politely but firmly and with a big smile, and let him know how offensive his allegations of bias are, but say you are sure the students will take as a compliment his notion that the student mock elections are such a powerful component in our local civic procedures.

Final part in today's Freeman about school boards and superintendents

Online poster "Voice O. Reason" suggests that two sitting board members in Kingston be voted off, and adds, "Show them the ultimate in voter micro-management!"

I liked the French voting slogan mentioned on NPR last night, when they were discussing Le Pen's politics vs Chirac's baggage: "Vote for the crook, not the fascist."

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2002

The enemy is working hard...word today is that Doan has hired buses to bring voters to the polls...that must mean old-timers ready to vote his partry line...we need to work veen harder to get people registered and bring out the vote.

Also heard that they will challenge Wendy on her job of bringing absentee ballots to the polling places...and we MUST (says Ed Sanders) have poll watchers there to see when machines are opened in the AM that they are set at 0 and when they close the polls to write down the numbers. I suggest Anne marie for Poll watching at end of day in West Hurley...since that seesm to be a point of concern. Tobe PS Rachel...don't cave to the bully...Expose him (there's that word again) for what he is...get letters to the editor out...still time for short ones to the Ph Times and Wood Times, and of course the Freeman.

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2002

Rachel, by all means the election at school should be held as scheduled. Do you think that Doan would accomodate anyone if the results would be favorable to him? Remember what he did to get Rose on the board. Hard ball. Go get him.

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2002

Is it indeed legal to bus in voters like that? Ted says it feels so nineteenth century.

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2002

Shall we challenge each voter he brings in...and make them produce ID to prove they are who they claim they are? How many heart attacks can we predict?

Or should we stash pamphelts and info on the bus? he he he T.

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2002

Adding to the chorus: yes, hold the student election and release the results as planned !!! Don't let his crazyness and bullying deter you, Rachel.......

latest info on Doan Last night and twice before in public, he claimed to be licensed in four states. We know he was not registered in NY and skirted state regs by clalling himself an engineer...now we larn he is NOT licensed in Wyoming and NOT licensed in Colorado.

heres' the details. Doan claims to be licensed in four states..NY, NJ ,Colorado and Wyoming.

He hasn't been licensed there for eight to 10 years. He lies...even about his own resume...doesn't this speak to his lack of character?

Wyoming email received today:

A search of our records shows Mr. Doan was originally licensed in Wyoming on September 19, 1973. His license expired on December 31, 1992. There is no indication there were ever any complaints filed against Mr. Doan. His last know address is H.C. Rt. 1 Box 195 Bearsville NY 12409. Please do not hesitate to contact the office if you need any further assistance. The reason Doan is bringing voters by by bus is that they are so old they cannot get there by any other means. Then when they do have heart attacks at the polls Rose can revive them with the defibrillators. That's what they are really intended to be used for.

Rachel - Let Doan stick his foot in his mouth and try to stop your vote and results from being publicized. He obviously feels the students have some sway with the voters and that frightens him. The way I see it either he quietly drops the subject or he rabidly persues it. Either way he is not in a good position for public perception. You have the upper hand so don't cave in to his wimpy demands. Imagine the headlines "60 year old school board member challenges the credibility of the 16 year old president of the Student Affairs Council and her student vote".

How about John Parete laying on to us Wilkens past as the tax assessor in the town of Olive? It was his biased assessments that led the way for Olive to be sued by NYC on property assessments some 15 years ago (?). Olive paid something to the effect of $30K to NYC for reimbursement. WIlkens was also reprimanded as a judge for being partial t his friends!

No worries, I'm not following Erik's suggestion. I just thought it was funny and that I would post it.

Ava has a statement to send to papers/the BOE via correspondance, Mr. Ferrara wanted to send me a statement (we talk sometimes, he's in Japan), and Erik wants to send something too. The election will go on as planned. If Mr. Doan has a problem with this election, he can talk to the administration who has been nothing but enthusiastic about it since last year.

A lot of people asked me about it today, which is interesting. Word travels fast.

Tobe, check the videotape to make sure the verb tense is appropriate. If he'd said, "I _have been_ licensed in 4 states," you can't touch him, it's technically correct. If he says "I _am_ licensed," then you can nail him. (See how he defines "is"...)

Kathy, Meg, Ann Marie and I went to the Women's Network Dinner. Wonderful meal, large crowd and good time. Kathy was introduced by president and presented herself and platform beautifully. Huge applause. I think a very small group of Doan supporters were there...ie.Nancy Walters. The main thing is, the word is out to vote. I am encouraged.

Tobe: Will "On the Record" be in newspapers? It's very well done and I think influence people when they see the facts. Did we opt to publish it at SOS meeting? I would love to put it in teacher's room at Phoenicia.

-- Anonymous, May 08, 2002

Just so you know...Doan said, and I quote: "I am currently licensed as a professional engineer in four states, NJ< NY Colorado and wyoming."

Melissa: Just waiting on approval of a version to put in the papers...I am afraid it'll be scaled down from the sheets you saw...although I would LOVE to have it all full page...loks like we'll have to make it half page... Hard to fit it all in such a small space. I have sheets available to those who wish to copy them and hand them out at functions, store fronts, etc. people are reacting very positively to seeing the record...

I would NOT put them in the teacher's room...Doan backers will scream bloody murder...no politicking allowed in school. Tobe

Don't forget to tape palm cards or flyers with the names showing to the back passenger windows of your cars, as long as they don't block visibility.

Freeman article on the Doan Deal to stp student elections: http://www.zwire.com/site/news.asp?brd=1769&pag=460&dept_id=74958

-- Anonymous, May 09, 2002

oops! too late. Elizabeth put the "on the Record" in teachers room already. I think it's OK, cause someone (not me) put Doan's flyer in the teachers room. I'm sensing our right wing people in building are for Wilkens...not Doan. There may be lots of split ballots. The Phoenicia attacks made people unhappy.

-- Anonymous, May 09, 2002

Still waiting for directions to Sandy's home for tonight's meeting. Anyone?

-- Anonymous, May 09, 2002

Melissa: Well, there you go, my conservative side came out again (who, me??) Glad the info got put in the room. I hope everyone is able to make print outs of this info and pass it around. Time to use all our bullets.

Jim: Directions...from Woodstock...go on Rte 375 past golf course...first LEFT onto Birch street...go to first house on left.. That's it. neil, did I get it right? Tobe

-- Anonymous, May 09, 2002

On 375 there is a road called Birch Lane that butts right up against the golf course. If coming from town take 375....make first LEFT onto Birch Lane. If coming from rt. 28 make a right on the Second Birch Lane (it goes in a crescent with 2 entrances on 375).

Go straight into her driveway when Birch makes the turn to the right. Her house is Straight ahead, and down with a basketball hoop in the driveway and a sign of ours on the lawn.

-- Anonymous, May 09, 2002

Sandi's place: Birch Lane hits 375 in two places. So it depends from which you come. The road is pretty short and it's L shaped, with a 90 degree turn right in the middle, next to the golf course. Sandi is right at the turn, next to the golf course. If you come from the West Hurley end of Birch Lane, you go right at the turn. From Woodstock end, you go straight. Is everyone really lost now? Did our post cards go out yet? I didn't get one, didn't know if we'd been trimmed off the mailing list to save stamps (which is OK).

-- Anonymous, May 09, 2002

Post cards are at the printers and are being processed. We will be limiting the mailing to all of Woodstock and any leftover to Olive.

This is an interesting addition to the online letters section of the Doan article in today's Freeman -- I can't recall the Webmaster ever posting there before.

I noticed the signs at the corner of John Joy and Zena are down. Must have been some giant windstorm between 9am and 4pm today.

-- Anonymous, May 10, 2002

Is that the large signs at the corner next to the Zena Firehouse???

BTW-Bruce, nice letter in the Freeman.

-- Anonymous, May 10, 2002

Those are the ones. One is at a severe angle and I couldn't see the other one. Some storm, huh?

-- Anonymous, May 10, 2002

Would you or anyone have the opportunity to help the signs out with a hammer, screws and some wood? I have the candidates most of tomorrow and would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, let us know if anyone can do it.

-- Anonymous, May 10, 2002

I'll try to do it later. I have to collect my 8 other thumbs.

Last Shandaken Koffee Klotch for Candidates at MJ & Rolf Reiss' house, 3-5pm, 688-5601 Here's directions for candidates and anyone who might like to attend.

Fire #958 Woodland Valley Road. 3 miles up from Woodland Valley Bridge on right, 2 houses beyond white picket fence, slate blue house w/apple trees in front yard.

Some article that shows Doan as his usual self...BULLY!! Just let him hang himself. I'm proud of Nick to have such presence of mind and good reporting skills. Obviously, the Freeman found him credible.

-- Anonymous, May 11, 2002

I'll put it up in the newspaper clipping thread

-- Anonymous, May 11, 2002

I tried to put the signs on Zena and John Joy up but they were pretty broken up. While I was there a car pulled up and a guy with reflecting glasses (shades of cool hand luke) pulled up to challenge their presence on Kingston city land. He was pretty angry but eventually pulled away. I wound up nailing the signs to the telephone pole, but I forsee that they will not last long. Obviously there are some angry people who resent them.

-- Anonymous, May 11, 2002

Please do NOT nail any signs onto telephone polls, leftover nails can hurt workers.

-- Anonymous, May 11, 2002

Does anyone

Understand the

Motivation to seek

Power over people?

Does the truth matter at all?

Onteora, it's time to heal

And move forward positively!

Now's the time:

Vote Tuesday, 5/21 On the ballot, 1 - 5 - 6 Will fix Onteora

-- Anonymous, May 11, 2002

Carol, have you seen any telephone poles up close? You can hardly see wood as the nails and staples are probably holding it up.

-- Anonymous, May 11, 2002

We absolutely have permission to place the signs on that lot next to the Zena firehouse. We do NOT have permission to place signs on the telephone poles. Best to recover the signs and perhaps we can restore them. They cost $32/sign! Thanks for the effort but sorry if I wasn't initially clear.

-- Anonymous, May 11, 2002

And if your friends who left nails on the telephone poles were jumping off cliffs, would you do so too? ;)

(sorry, it's almost Mother's Day, the Mothers' Union requires me to recite the ancient mantras)
