Cream cheese.

Can I use cultured sour cream from the store as a starter for homemade cream cheese (goat's milk)? I've used cultured buttermilk as a starter before, but it comes out too bland. Thanks!!

Never tried that one. Have made it w/yogurt tho. Tangier than I liked....so.... I made some yogurt (from store culture) and added non fat dry milk powder to subdue it. Made a nice cheese spread.

Could someone give me a recipe for making homemade cream cheese? Thanks. Layne

We have only made it starting with yogurt. Our home starter is kinda tangy so when we want to make cream cheese we use store bought yogurt for the starter, less tangy.

Thanks John and Sue. The only recipe that I have for cream cheese uses either buttermilk or a powdered cheese starter. Don't really care for either as they are a little too bland for us. We like "tangy"!! I'm even a fan of blu cheese! I'll try using store yogurt, but maybe, John, you could share your recipe for homemade starter?? Thanks!
