Leica Forum on photo.netgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread |
I was browsing through the photo.net and I saw a Leica Photography Forum:http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a?topic_id=1548
So far there's only one question (dated June 5, 2002). Is this the new home of this forum?

good detective work hadji. it sure seems that way.but, where are the archives?
i think both forums should run in parallel for a given amount of time; questions, comments, etc. should appear in both.

I think they are in the process of moving them together. From what I gather (from Tony and the photo.net people) it isn't really that simple.

I also saw links to some of the other LUSENET forums that are being moved over (e.g. the Canon EOS forum). So I guess this is the forum's new home.On a related note, I turned off the Java pull-down menus on the site and it runs so much faster. I'd always been kind of annoyed at how slow photo.net runs and this helps somewhat.

I turned those off they day they started them.

Some of the archives are becomming difficult to search-- too many entries. Particularly the "Leica M" category. Too bad this category can't be broken down into sub categories.

Yes, they haven't completed the migration yet. There will be full text search capability once our archives are migrated. I almost feel like there are too many categories, though. Also, I'm not sure if our categories will be migrated. I don't know how that's going to work. We'll find out!
Anyway, I would guess that it is safe to continue using our forum as is until we hear or find out otherwise. I'm pretty sure there will be an automatic redirect to photo.net once LUSENET has been taken off line.

Tony, will you still be moderating the forum when it moves to photo.net? Or will be become unmoderated?

Please pardon my ignorance, but how do I turn off the pulldown menus on Photonet as has been suggested above ?Regards
Greg

Hello, everyone. I'm the person at photo.net who is moving your forum. As someone has noticed, the forum already technically "exists" at photo.net. It is where the software puts it automatically, which is not prominent, and there aren't any archives. But every email address that has been used in the forum has been turned into a new photo.net account (except for the ones that were already there), and you can go to http://www.photo.net/register to "recover" your password. Many people actually have several accounts, caused by multiple spellings and capitalizations of email addresses on LUSENET, and this is one of the problems that we are trying to resolve.
Most of the delay in the move has been caused by the fact that some of the updates required for the 170000 messages that we are moving from LUSENET to photo.net (in 10 forums) are quite big and crash the server if not done correctly. We know this because we have done some of the incorrectly, crashing the server. In fact, four times, one of which took 2 hours to recover from. Doing the updates is small chunks is slower and requires more programming -- and this is the main reason for it taking longer than planned.
Thanks for your patience and we look forward to seeing you soon on photo.net.
