population of SF in 1930s and 1940s

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

The table available at www.zpub.com/sf50/sf/hgpop.htm indicates that San Francisco's population grew by only 142 persons between 1930 and 1940. I would have expected a considerable growth due to the dust bowl in the midwest. Was something else happening to skew the data? Thanks.

This place (http://www.mtc.ca.gov/datamart/stats/house.htm) shows a population difference between 1930 and 1940 of 27,380. Might there have been a typo on the zpub site?

Whoops. After more careful reading, I find that the figures in each table are for different things.

In 1930, it's "families:" "Data on households was first collected in the 1940 Decennial Census. Data for 1930 is for families. By definition, families exclude single person households and households of unrelated individuals."
