ok, all mechanical types out there,,,85 chevy p/u,, the windsheild washer pump stoppped working, no buzz or any sign of life. I bought one of those aftermarket "universal" pumps. I checked the 2 wires going into the pump,, both are HOT. This is one of the in the reservior pumps. But 2 hot wires?? so, is this a bad pump,, switch,, or a short in the line? Would it be easier to jusst run new wires and a switch using one of the old wires as the hot? Would a ground run to the body still be ok for the pump?

First thoughts are if you have a voltmeter you can check the integrity of the motor by doing an ohms/resistance check. These are very handy little instruments to have and not but about $6-10.00.Are you using a light checker to determine your hot wires?
Try checking both sides of your switch first to see what you got, or the harness running into your switch, and get an idea of the status of your switch.

the switch is part of the turn signal switch,, and Im afraid if I take it apart,, I'll loose the rest. I checked the wires with a test light. I cant get to the pump itself, just the wires, the pump is molded inside the resevior.

Then try to check the switch by switching it on and off while you have the test light hooked to one of the pump wires, then check the other wire. One of the wires should give you a blinking when you engage and disengage the switch if the switch is working. This should allow you to determine if the switch is the problem or not.

well,,, I had to disconnect the pump,, it was bad and was causing a short, making the 2 wires hot. Once I did that, the wired returned to normal, one hot, one ground,, now I have washers again ! ! ! YEAAA,,,,, but what a pain to pull that reservior,, one bolt is easy, the other,,,,,,,, I need more tools
