I recently saw an online picture of a Key system train on the Bay Bridge. I would like it very much if anyone could tell me where I can find pictures or info. Why did they get rid of them? I would like to have ridden across the Bay Bridge on a train. Thank you very much.

The trains were probably removed to facilitate converting the Bay Bridge to handle one way traffic on each deck. Previously, each deck had two way traffic. The upper deck had passenger traffic and the lower deck was for commercial traffic and the trains.As a child I would visit my aunt in Berkeley riding the Key System. The AC was a disappointment as the window was much smaller. It was harder to look out for a tyke.

For a brief period (1939-1941) three separate train companies ran electric trains over the bay bridge: the Key System, the Interurban Electric Railway (IER), and the Sacramento Northern. The IER, a Southern Pacific subsidiary, folded in 1941, and the Sacramento Northern ended passenger service the same year. The Key system was "in the way" on the lower deck, but BART was already a gleam in planners' eyes. It would be up to date, sleek and modern, and run on private right of way and extend service beyond the Oakland/Berkeley/Piedmont terminals of the Key.
