Woodward's Gardens were located in the 4 block area bounded by Mission, 15th, Valencia and 13th Streets. It might be on the side of the Armory. but... Thanks! Jim

Here, son. I just by chance happened to come across something about those gardens. Read the story here. It mentions that the gardens are in the Mission district.

There is a plaque that mentions Woodward Gardens on Leidesdorff and Sacramento Streets.

Thanks Craig! I didn't know that one was there. That's the site of the What Cheer House also owned by Woodward. I'm glad it's not forgotten. SAo much good stuff tucked in a 7 mile square package.

I just saw it last night. The plaque is indeed outside the restaurant with the same name. It's on Mission, by Duboce, on the west side of Mision ( south of Duboce), by the ground, on the southern end of the brick building that now houses the restaurant. ( which is excellent, by the way, and has a picture of the original facade to the gardens inside). The plaque describes the original perameters of the gardens, bordered by Mission, Duboce, 14th and Valencia.

Mr. R.B. Woodward was my maternal great-great grandfather. Mnay of his descendants still live in the Bay Area. I often heard stories about the gardens from my grandmother Ethel Melone Brown. I have some of the paintings and silverware etc. from the Gardens' collections, and I think my sister and brother do too. Both plaques mentioned are sites I like to visit now and then..and we have enjoyed the restaurant too!
