Is San Francisco built on a rock? If so, is it considered an island?

Uphill has bedrock but harbor area is mostly fill or sediment. Should all be an island in about 5 million years as the pacific plate moves north.

You are confusing San Francisco with John Donne. Or Paul Simon. San Francisco is an island of sorts culturally and in terms of attitude and diversity.

It sits on a peninsula that sticks up like a left thumb with the San Francisco Bay being towards the palm and the Pacific Ocean on the other side.

I truly wish I'd drawn up a map of where I thought the city was when I first moved there. Having seen "The Graduate" I seriously thought San Francisco was inland and Berkeley or something was on the peninsula. If you didn't see the movie, that's because the title shot had Dustin Hoffman driving the wrong way across the Bay Bridge on his way from San Francisco to Berkeley. That was the only way he could be filmed on account of the eastbound traffic is on the lower deck of the bridge.

Oh, and thank you again, Mr. Simon.

You're confusing Paul Simon with Elton John.
