archangels

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

Looking through the Bible I found only two passages that mention ARCHANGELS:

15) According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. (1 Thes 4) . 9)But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!" 10Yet these men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand; and what things they do understand by instinct, like unreasoning animals--these are the very things that destroy them. (Ju )

But I've read and heard about Seven Archangels. I could not find this number of Archangels nor their names in the Bible. Now my questions are two: Does the Bible mention SEVEN archangels?

Does the Bible give other names besides Gabriel, Raphael and Michael?

Dear Enrique,

The "seven angels" who stand about the throne of God are mentioned about ten times in the book of Revelation, but they are not identified as archangels, and their individual names are not given. The only angels whose names we know are the three you mentioned.

Peace! Paul

-- Paul (PaulCyp@cox.net), January 13, 2003.

Paul,

Those seven angels also are mentioned in the Book of Tobit (Ch. 12), one of which is Raphael.

You probably already new, but it was intersting to me because I just got to that point in the Bible. I've been reading the OT and NT parallel since May 2002. I'm almost twice through with the NT, but the OT is a bit longer and is taking me more time.

Anyway - Thanks for your posts!

In Christ.

Jake,

I received a book for Christmas about angels and they do mention the archangels. I just glanced through the book, as I did not read it thoroughly yet. I will check out the names of the 7 archangels..and get back to you.

Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, Sariel, and Jeremiel are the names which you seek, as a praticing Satanist I am looking for more info on your angels for a book I am authoring and felt you might benefit from this information

-- Dather (Dather@aerosurf.net), February 12, 2003.

I think some of them are Raphael, Miguel, Gabriel, Seintiel ( I'm not sure with the spelling), Baraquiel ( This one also ), and Lucifer. Can you give other names?

-- Jamie Joseph (jjqcastillo07@yahoo.com), August 16, 2003.

Sorry for my mistakes, according to my research, the names of the seven archangels are: Michael, Gabriel, Rafael, Uriel, Sealtiel, Jhudiel, and Barachiel.

-- Jamie Joseph (jjqcastillo07@yahoo.com), August 16, 2003.

The last four names are from fiction, not from the Bible.

in referance to archangels could anyone possibley give me the passage in which god comands the fallen archangel (lucifer) to earth ?

-- J.D Langley (routineirregular@yahoo.co.uk), October 21, 2003.

I'm not sure that there is a passage that fits your description exactly, J.D.. There is this one:

Luke 10:18 -- And Jesus said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven."

And there is this one:

Revelation 12:7-12
Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they were defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world -- he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Rejoice then, O heaven and you that dwell therein! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!"

Please go away all satanists. You will find that your life is disordered, conflicyed and unhappy as long as you hold to that illogical cult. It is a path to mental illness, at the very least.

There are only three named archangels out of seven, but it is a mystery as to Saint Michael's status.

According to Saint Thomas Aquinas, archangels are among the lower order of angels because they are concerned with the conduct of men. So archangels are only one step above ordinary angels, such as guardian angels.

At the other end of the spectrum are the Seraphim, having three sets of wings. The Seraphim are concerned with communciating the fire of God's love directly from him to all his creation.

The mystery of Saint Michael is that he is an archangel, concerned with the works of men, but also leads the host of angels in heaven, even against Satan after that angel decided not love and serve God.

The bible does mention other types of angels than Gabriel, Raphael and Michael, but does not give their name. I don't think Satan qualifies as an angel anymore. He is without God. He is a demon that is to be feared, and not respected.

-- Pat Delaney (pat@patdelaney.net), October 22, 2003.

first off, Pat,

the satanists who were visiting were polite, and didnt break any rules. lets leave the banning to people who deserve it. besides, how are you going to convert people if you push them away???

second, your confusion over Michaels position is no doubt caused by your own erring personal interpretation. i recommend you stick to church teachings.

-- paul (dontSendMeMail@notAnAddress.com), October 22, 2003.

Go to http://www.olacc.org/angels.html its a good website for what you are looking for. (p.s. just a suggestion but search for the truthes of god and not archangels cause god is the one that is exalted)

-- Prophet (jeremiahed87@msn.com), October 22, 2003.

Thanks Paul,

I know you are trying to be helpful.

The way to deal with a satanist is a personal judgement call. Sure it would be nice to convert the statanist, but what about all the borderline Catholics that visit this site who are affected by what the satanist teaches. Would it not be better to rebuke these people so that the borderline types can know we reject the teachings of a satanist? I know the satanist is a child of God, but what they advocate is evil.

The mystery of Saint Michael in the hierarchy of angels was developed by Saint Thomas Aquinas. I'm just reiterating what he recognized. Its a mystery because we don't have an answer based on the information available, and we know we can't get it ourselves. It will be revealed in Heaven, or if God chooses to give us more information.

Either way, Saint Michael is very cool. In my parish, we publicly recite the prayer for his intercession after every mass. Its a great way to put on the spiritual armor, so to speak.

-- Pat Delaney (pat@patdelaney.net), October 23, 2003.

paul,

Other than what is mentioned in the Bible, I'm not sure there is any official church teaching on angels. I have a scholarly book that traces and comments on all the bible quotations that mentions them.

Are you aware of something I'm not? If there is an encyclical or something, please share.

-- Pat Delaney (pat@patdelaney.net), October 23, 2003.

the only thing i was aware of is that all the church teaching i've ever had has stated that archangels are the cheif angels. not just Michael, who commands the angels in battle, but also the other arch angels.

to my understanding, they are more or less like a leader class of angel. other angels may be more powerful, but are followers certain archangels. just as a human leader may not be as knowledgable or strong as one of his followers, so an angel may be a leader without being seraphim, etc.

but, i could be wrong... thats all from what i was taught in church by a few old priests.

Archangel: 8th ranked of the nine orders of the celestial hierarchy

In the apocryphal book of Enoch, four others are mentioned: Uriel, Raguel, Sariel & Jeramial.

In the New Testament - Apocalypse of St. John (Revelation: XXI 7-9) "there was a great battle in Heaven. Michael and his angels fought with the dragon, and the dragon fought and his angels; and they prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in Heaven..."

In the Old Tesatment apocryha, in the book of Henoch, Michael is depicted as ushering Henoch himself into the divine presence, but he is also associated with other great archangels, Gabriel, Raphael and Phanuel.

NT in Jude IV: "Not even the archangel Michael, when he was engaged in anargument with the devil about the corpse of Moses, dared..."

Daniel IX: 21 "...still at prayer, when Gabriel, the being I had seen originally in a vision, flew suddenly down to me at the hour of the evening sacrafice..."

Luke I:26 " In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth..."

Tobit XII: 15 "I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ever ready to enter the presence of the glory of God."

-- GG (bountyhunterbooks@sympatico.ca), November 05, 2003.

aren't there 4 named in the koran (Jibraiil (Gabriel, who is said to have revealed the Koran to Muhammad) and Mika'il (Michael) - the other two being Azrael (another form of Raphael, Angel of Death), and Israfel, Angel of Music who plays the flute at the end of the day and will sound the trumpet that wakes the dead on the Day of Judgment.) so because Gabriel, Michael and Raphael appear in both religions, isn't there argument for there only being 3 and the others being lieutenants of the archangels?

No, Benji, there is no "argument for" anything at all.

Although it has a few elements of truth, Islam is basically a false religion -- a religious way of life invented by a man (Mohammed), who picked and chose things that he liked in Judaism, Christianity, and paganism, and made a conglomerate. He received no revelation whatsoever from God or from good angels. Whatever he has to say about names of angels (other than those in the Bible) are a mere figment of his imagination -- or they may be the names of devils revealed to him by satan.

-- (Be@Truly.Catholic), January 31, 2004.

Just a thought on the mystery Saint Michael and his role among the angels.

In the Book of Revelation, Saint Michael is leading the angels in battle against Satan. But this is at the Final Judgement which refers only to men, not angels. The angels were finally judged at the moment they were first created. It was then that they chose to either Serve or Not.

My point here is that archangels, of which Saint Michael is one, are in the lower order of angels as they are concerned with the affairs of men. The higher orders of angels are not so concerned with men. They are concerned with the affairs of heaven or of God Himself (as the Seraphim are). The Final Judgement of Man will not affect the order of heaven. That has already been decided. So since Michael is an archangel, it is appropriate that he lead the heavenly host in the battle against Satan at the Final Judgement of Man.

I conjecture that Satan was struck down from heaven by a higher order of angel at the final judgement of the angels. In fact, God, in His infinite wisdom, has only revealed names of the lower order angels because we need not be concerned with the higher orders as we will not see them in this life.

Thus, the hierarchy of angels that Saint Thomas Aquinas developed is harmonized with the Book of Revelation.

Quod Erat Demonstratum ;)

Why is it "obvious" that Islam is a false religion invented by a man (Mohammed)when Christianity itself was in fact "invented" 2000 years ago by: (arguments exist for) Jesus, Paul and/orJames. This is an honest question, I'm not trying to create controversy, I'm simply trying to understand why one religion, whose founding is subject to much debate any more "true" than another. You were very qucik to denounce the Koran as containing truth when in fact, much of the Christian Bible and Jewish Torah are full of ambiguous and often contradictory passages. For the record, I am neither a muslim nor am I a Satanist like the other poster above.

-- Scott A (morrigan@nbnet.nb.ca), May 13, 2004.

Dear Scott A:
To answer your opening question: We have never said it was obvious that Isl -m was started by a false prophet, Mohammad. If it were obvious, the religion would have been rejected by most people. It is a devious religion; brought to earth by Satan, who encouraged a false prophet. He was a type of heretic; deviating from the faith of the Israelite prophets. Enough of the truth was held in his ''doctrine'' to snare many lost sheep of the people of God. But, as Christ prophesied beforehand, it was by the fruits of this prophet & others we were to know he was evil. Those fruits, without any doubt, are evil. That much is obvious. I can see that point as obvious, because the people who are faithful to the false doctrine cannot discern all good from evil. They have become hardened to cruelty and injustices; not seeing the sin inherent in such faith. Their faith is based on submission, not LOVE.

We believe the Catholic faith of the apostles because it was supported by God Himself; not as you would have it, ''Christianity itself was in fact invented 2000 years ago by: (arguments exist for) Jesus, Paul and/orJames.''

Ours is a faith based on LOVE; as Christ has revealed God. He is LOVE (1 John, 4). The Son of God revealed this, not any apostle or ''messenger''. By faith we know with clear understanding what would be a great mystery --without faith.

Not just because it's revealed in a Bible, either. Way before the New Testament scripture had come to be, those disciples of Jesus Christ were testifying to the truth with their own blood. They disseminated the Gospel to all nations at the cost of their lives; because they were witnesses to Christ's own life. Their teachings had been acquired directly from the Son of God, not from a mere prophet. There are many aspects of this revelation found in the Old Testament and in our own apostles' doctrines. We can't cover each one here in one forum post.

Here we can only give you an overview. But, since you seem interested; let's hear your questions or objections.

Scott A,

To build off of Eugene's excellent answer, I will repost something that Paul M. put on another thread. This shows the prophecies about Jesus in the Old Testament:

---- Is 7:14 (The Messiah would be born of a virgin) 2 Sam 7:12-16 (The Messiah would be of the House of David) Micah 5:2 (The Messiah would be born in Bethlehem) Is 11:2 (The Messiah would be of the lineage of Jesse, and would be anointed by the Holy Spirit) Is 40:3-5 (His coming would be preceded by a messenger) Is 9:1 (He would preach and minister in Galilee) Zech 9:9 (He would enter Jerusalem on a donkey) Ps 118:22, Is 53:3 (He would be rejected by men) Zech 11:12 (He would be sold for 30 pieces of silver) Is 53:7 (He would stand silent before His accusers) Ps 22:7-8 (He would be mocked by His captors) Is 50:6 (He would be spit upon) Ps 22:16 (His hands and feet would be pierced) Is 53:12 (He would forgive and pray for his tormentors) Zech 12:10 (His side would be pierced) Ps 69:21 (He would be offered gall and vinegar to drink) Ps 34:20 (None of His bones would be broken) Ps 22:18 (His tormentors cast lots for His garments) Ps 16:10 (He would not remain in the grave) Ps 110:1 (He would take His place at the right hand of God)

-- Paul M. (PaulCyp@cox.net), May 06, 2004.

So indeed we see that Christianity was not "invented." Rather, it was a fulfillment of what God promised in the Old Testament to His covenant people Israel -- that a Messiah would come.

God bless,

-- Emily ("jesusfollower7@yahoo.com), May 13, 2004.

The old testament and books of Judea have all the original names. They were categorized and well known in ancient times.

The names of angels were removed from the bible during the early days (perhaps the infamous and much debated Constantine rewrites?). I am assuming by what I have read this was done to discourage new believers from individualizing angels (the Church was worried that people would be to devoted to angels and divert their attention from the Christ.

The bible only mentions Michael (usually as St. Michael, depending on the version, to take away the 'angel' label) and Gabriel who came to the Virgin Mary announcing her impending birth.

Because the orginal documentation is no longer unavailable or was hidden back then, many people came up with different lists.

I found some more writings about the 7 archangels but am not sure of the accuracy but I'm sure it can be easily verified if someone is interested.

In this time of the End of the Times, let's invoke those that holy Clement of Alexandria called the Princes firstborns of the Angels.

You can read more at http://perso.club-internet.fr/custodi/CULTE- ANGESbr.htm THE CULT OF THE SEVEN ANGELS

If the cult of the angels carries up to the beginnings of Christianity, so same the excesses stretching to idolatry last to be forbidden by the Cannon 35 of the Council of Laodicée, it is permitted to say that the devotion will really develop itself to the middle age ,— holy Bernard with his sermons on the psalm “Qui habitat” was there probably for many,— and will bloom to the XVIème century, that lives François of Estaing, bishop of Rodez, to make itself the untiring apostle of the devotion to the guardian angels, notably.

In 1556, in a church of Palermo dedicated to a martyr of the order of the Carmelites, holy Angel, an omitted fresco reappeared under the distemper of which one had covered it, and one distinguished seven archangels there. Some enrolments named them and them «specialised » : MICHEL victorius, GABRIEL nuncius, RAPHAEL medicus… The first raised the palm of the triumph and the standard white to red cross, the second a lantern and a mirror intended to reflect the divine orders, the third the ineffable remedy pyxis.

But the four others ?

URIEL fortis socius, Uriel the strong mate, waving the naked and exhausting sword of the flames, a tradition carrying up to holy Ambroise and coming from the IVème Book (apocryphal) of Esdras, permitted to identify it the formidable Guard of the lost Paradise… Of very former habits of piety,— as makes faith of the cameos dating the beginning of the Christian era, a blade of gold found in the tomb of the girl of Stilicon, of it — joined his name to the one of the three big Archangels named by the Holy writing and returned it nearly orthodox, so that one will find it again, this name, in a Ritual of Chartres of the XVIIème century, to the Litanies of the patients.

The three last, on the other hand, from where come? JEHUDIEL renumerator, provided of a whip and one crown, as executor of the divines sentences; BARACHIEL adjutor, structural of the white roses in his coat ; finally SEALTIEL orator, the hands joined on the chest, spokesman of the contrite humanity before the judge…

There was like a devout soul impetus toward these Seven Minds that the Bible names the Seven Eyes, God's Seven voices and foresees like future ministers of his anger… The devotion prospered in Sicily, especially fervid that it was in short only a reviving of a very old and very respectable piety towards the Minds that are held before God's Throne. The books inspired in named three only. Of very good hour, one had looked for to designate the four other. The IVème Book of Esdras gave Uriel and Jérémiel ; the pseudo Hénoch provided the names of Raguel, Sariel, Phanuel, Remiel ; by distortion of these last two names, maybe, Bède the Venerable invoked Paniel and Rumiel ; the Litany Carolinas, published by Mabillon, indicate « Orihel » for Uriel, Raguhel, Tobihel ; « Raguel » is on a Christian sarcophagus; a manuscript of the IXème century, conserved to the Library of Cologne, recommend the recourse to « Orihel » against the demon, Raguhel for the journeys, Barachael when one must solicit powerful magistrate some… on the other hand, the Talmudic tradition enumerated Sammael, Izidkiel, Hananael, Prosoraiels, Yabsael, read themselves on a gnostic cameo and those of Renel and Azaels on an amethyst engraved of the beginning of the Christian era .

However, since 745, to the Council of Rome, Pope Zacharie had condemned all other name of angel positively that Michel, Gabriel and Rafael, condemnation reiterated by the XVIème admonishes the Council of Aix-la-Chapelle in 789.

Has the exception of Barachiel that one can identify to the Barachael of Cologne, the names of the last three angels didn't even lean on a tradition, so little authorized that she was.

No one appeared to astonish themselves Palermo of it. A priest, Angelo Duca, was enthusiastic for the rejuvenated devotion and propagated it through Italy. In 1523, a church, endowed by Charles - Quint, is constructed Palermo in honor of the seven Archangel; the cult of God's seven Cooperators,— under the terms of the Pseudo Denys,— rested perfectly on a principle orthodoxe ; what was least, the names and the attributes that didn't justify any passage of the writing, first caused at Pope Pie IV a resistance of which triumphed the devotion of Duca Angelo; after Naples and Venice, Rome accommodates this new shape of piety. The big room of the Thermal baths of Dioclétien, transformed in church by Michelangelo, was dedicated in 1561 to the Virgin Mary and to the seven Archangels who were represented on a retable with the names and the attributes of the fresco of Palermo.

Eight years earlier, during a « epidemic of possessions », one had invoked Rome, victoriously, the seven Minds. Some missals were printed, containing their office; Flanders, Spain, France adopted the cult of the sept Archangels, of appeared as much more comfortably than a book Rome to had not contributed a little « popularize » the devotion among the pilgrims of the Eternal City. In Germany, success was such that one assigned the protection of one of the Archangels to each of the seven Voters. «Mystical idea, worthy of the middle age », says Mr. Emile Mâle that returns the fact. À the following century, one had to recover the Seven Minds in orthodox Russia. The Jesuits propagated their names until Philippines while some nuns chose for boss of their monastery the Jéhudiel archangel…

Has Rome, yet, a reaction occurred against the excesses of a cult that, orthodox in his desire to honour the Seven First Angels, led to to invoke four characters that their names, their functions, their attributes didn't prevent to be perfectly imaginary.

The tradition was in spite of preserved quite by many spiritual authors. The Father Jean of the Cerda, in his “ work of excellentia cælestium spirituum” (1631), connected the names apocryphal to the Hebrew oral tradition and mentioned one Latin hymn assigning at every Archangel a very definite function, as well as seven different prayers. Thirteen years later, it was the father Paul of Barry who published Lyons a dedicated book, of the most charming manner, to his guardian angel. After having deplored « that one doesn't know their true names », he gave on the last four angels the precisions following : « le fourth, Uriel, illuminates and educated the men by his inspiration ; the fifth incites them to the prayer ; the sixth invites them to praises it of God ; the seventh procures us the blessings of the Heaven and exhort us to the thank profusely. ». He affirmed again, having certainly seen the paintings or engravings inspired of the fresco of Palerme : « Jéhudiel has very good grace with one crown of gold in his right hand and a whip to three black cords in the other ; and Barachiel is pleasant, having at the end of his coat replicate quantity of white roses ». But, carefully, him conclude : « I doesn't want it throughout to invite you to the devotion of this angels.

This prudence imposed itself. The names of the last four angels had must be erased of all paintings that represented them and the cult of the Seven Minds, Rome, disappeared before the one of the Very Virgin Mary Queen of the Angels.

A resurgence occurs in a work of the Father Faber, “the Saint Sacrament”, that takes the forsaken tradition and enriches it even, « works of the private revelations», seeing in Séaltiel the comforter of agar in the desert and in Barachiel the angel who announced the birth of Isaac. According to the same sources, the Father Fabert assigns to every Archangel keeps it of a Sacrament : Gabriel, the Baptism, Michel the Confirmation, Rafael the extreme- unction, Uriel the Eucharist, Jéhudiel the Penitence, Sealtiel the order and Barachiel the Marriage…

So all at it can be looked only as devout dreaming, nevertheless have perfectly advisable to invoke the Seven Minds, as torecommended it the XVIIe century another big devout of the angels, H. MR. Boudon, archidiacre of Evreux. We know Michel, Gabriel, Rafael… probably, although one can estimate with the Father Paul of Barry that « that big damage », won't know ourselves that to the apocalyptic days the names of the four Unknown. After the excesses of a fanciful piety, maybe one has too tendency to forget them, those that holy Clement of Alexandria called the Princes firstborns of the Angels.

Is it 'Archangels' or can it be spelt 'Ark Angels' as well??

-- edward richard (edward@scotslandspeople.com), March 10, 2005.

It's "archangels". The prefix "arch-" means "highest", "chief", "most important", etc. As in "archbishop" or "archenemy". The word "ark" does not have the same connotation.

I can see why you might ask the question since in "archbishop" or "archenemy" the prefix is pronounced "arch", whereas in "archangel" it is pronounced "ark".

-- Paul M. (PaulCyp@cox.net), March 10, 2005.

To the best of my knowledge, there are 5 angels named in the Canon of Scripture:

Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Lucifer (the angel of light; and yes he is still an angel although fallen, the same as we are still human although fallen), and in the Book of Revelation in, of all verses, Chapter 9 Verse 11 (yes, 9-11), we find "the angel of the bottomless pit" (aka the destroyer angel) with two names - Abaddon (Hebrew), and Apollyon (Greek).

Who is Uriel?

-- eugene c. chavez (loschavez@pacbell.net), March 10, 2005.

Whenever I see that name (Uriel), I think, "the guardian angel of men's restrooms," because the name is similar to "urinal."

The following is from a non-Catholic site on angels. The books mentioned in the first paragraph are apocryphal (not in the Old Testament canon).

Uriel is one of the archangels of rabbinical angelology. He was sent by God to answer the questions of Esdras (II Esdras iv). He is mentioned in I Enoch and IV Ezra, where he "watches over thunder and terror."
In the Midrash 1, Uriel is said to be one of the four guardians of God's throne. In The Book of Adam and Eve he presides over repentance.
Uriel appears in Milton's Paradise Lost where he is the 'Regent of the Sun' and 'sharpest-sighted spirit of all in heaven.'

-- (Be@Truly.Catholic), March 10, 2005.

Uriel seems urinary to your brand of humor? Hmmm.

''el'' in the name of an angel has always been God. Or the name of a prophet; Samuel, for instance.

-- eugene c. chavez (loschavez@pacbell.net), March 10, 2005.

Thanks for the "thank you."

-- (Be@Truly.Catholic), March 11, 2005.

And I knew that about "el". In my first post, I almost mentioned that the two particles of Uriel mean "light (or fire)" and "God." So some say that the name means "light/fire of God," others "God is light/fire."
