When did Blue Angels fly between financial district buildings?greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread |
If anyone can tell me what streets and how low the Blue Angels buzzed the Financial District. I think this was in the 1960's or 1970's.

Well, more or less down Montgomery Street and very low over the Russ and Mills Buildings. They weren't flying between the buildings -- that would have done a lot more than scare the hell out of the office workers (of which I was one).I think, though, that someone did fly under the Golden Gate Bridge.

As I recall, they buzzed the Financial District in the early 80's. Not sure if it was '82 or '83. I was working at the Carl's Jr. at Embarcadero Four at the time. I was cleaning the outside dining tables when I heard a plane approaching, and flying VERY low. I looked up in time to see that plane dip to one side and fly by. It wasn't so low that it would hit anything, but it was definitely between the buildings. They also flew under the Golden Gate Bridge at least 2 years in a row. The first year I saw them do that was 1995. It was pretty impressive. Two planes actually did a loop, first going under the bridge, then up and over, and then back under. The crowd where I was watching (on Twin Peaks) went wild. They loved it (so did I)!!! It made the news, along wiht the reprimand the Blue Angels got for performing such a "dangerous" maneuver. In 1996, they flew under the bridge again, but no loop that time. Again, they got reprimanded for the "Dangerous" stunt, and that put an end to that.

I was working at the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange, corner of Pine and Bush, in '82-'85. I saw a Blue Angel fly past, going towards the bay down Pine and definitely between financial district buildings. What I remeber the most is the physical sensation as it blew by, making you take a step back to keep your balance. Damn!

I believe it was the early eighties, My office is on the 42 floor of one of the highrises, and the Blue Angels flew between the Prymaid and One Embarcadero a few times, I remembered looking down at the planes...What a rush!
