Some local adventure race training on Saturday (2/8) that might be of interest to orienteers...Okay, we're on. The course is set and ready to rock. There is a slight change from earlier plans, but it will make the whole thing much more flexible. Any questions, just drop me a line - dbennett2 @ kc.rr.com
Multi-loop Madness
Saturday, February 8
Briefing at 9:45 Start time 10 AM
Minor Park (minutes from 435 and Holmes)
directions below
The course will consist of an approx. 9K (5 mile) loop(clearly marked). You can pick from two suggested courses or tailor it as you see necessary. I'd like to see people do either the Supersize or Regular, but the beauty is the whole thing will be adaptable to make it possible for anyone to do at least part.
Supersize - about 30 miles
Short run (1/2 mile maybe)
Two laps bike
Two laps trek
Two laps bike
Regular - about 15 miles
Short run (1/2 mile maybe)
One lap bike
One lap trek
One lap bike
* note that each lap has two creek crossings that are only ankle deep, but there's no way across without getting the feet wet. Expect it. Bring spare socks.
I'm a top 1/3 kinda guy (certainly not elite) and did the Regular in 2:14 Saturday. I moved pretty well on the bike (but ran into some mud) and ran almost the whole trek. Take that for what it's worth and it might help you pick your course. I'll stay until everyone is off the course but there will be cutoffs for impending darkness, if necessary. Doubt it, though.
Directions
The park is close to 117th and Holmes, just South of 435 in south KCMO. From 435, take the Holmes exit and go south to Red Bridge Road. Go left (east) on Red Bridge for 1.1 miles. Turn right (south) on Blue River Parkway and go 1.7 miles. There will be two parking lots and soccer fields on your right. We'll be in the soccer field lot unless the gate is locked. If it is, there is ample parking right next to it.
Required gear
Mountain bike
HELMET (no 2 ways about this one)
spare tube/patch kit
Sturdy footwear (whatever that means)
waterbottles/Camelbak whatever works for you
spare socks
munchies
